Repsol Honda's Casey Stoner goes more than a second under existing lap record to grab position for the 2011 Silverstone MotoGP race; Simoncelli, Lorenzo fill out front row, Spies fourth, Hayden seventh, Edwards eighth with broken collarbone
Former MotoGP champion Casey Stoner took his fourth pole position in six tries during qualifying for the Silverstone MotoGP event in Great Britain on Saturday afternoon under threatening skies. The Repsol Honda rider smashed the lap record with a time of 2:02.020, more than a second quicker than last year’s pole time set by Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo. San Carlo Honda Gresini’s Marco Simoncelli was once again on form, coming in second with a time .188 behind the Australian. Lorenzo completed the front row just .029 seconds from Simoncelli, and was feeling upbeat to be so close to Stoner’s time.
Unlike some of the previous MotoGP qualifying sessions, it wasn’t all Stoner. Simoncelli leapt to the top of the timesheet at the start of the session, followed by Lorenzo at the 30-minute mark with a lap 1.5 seconds quicker than his best practice time. Simoncelli then took the top spot again with a 2:02.389, and followed that up shortly afterward with a 2:02.285 that looked like it might be enough for pole. Unfortunately for the Italian and the rest of the field, Stoner soon uncorked his unassailable time with about five minutes to go, and no one ever threatened after that point.
