Wild-card Hopkins goes quickest in Superbike Q2

Third and fourth quickest were two more surprises, the Ducati 1098 machines of Sylvain Guintoli (Effenbert - Liberty Racing) and Maxime Berger (Supersonic Racing Team), while Marco Melandri (Yamaha World Superbike Team) moved up from a slow start to fifth in the combined session standings.
The third major title contender, Max Biaggi (Aprilia Alitalia Racing Team), was however in clear difficulty on the track, languishing down in 15th place.
Riders who did not make it into the Tissot-Superpole included Troy Corser (BMW Motorrad Motorsport), Alex Lowes and Fabrizio Lai (Castrol Honda) and Joan Lascorz (Kawasaki Racing Team).

Privateer Support at its Highest for Jacob Argubright going into X Games

Jacob Argubright Press Release
With X Games and the entire Endurocross Season rapidly approaching, Jacob Argubright has been working his hardest to make sure that he is ready both physically and emotionally for what is about to happen to the off road community. In just over 3 days, the entire world is about to be made aware of "Off Road Racing" and the phenomenon that is Endurocross. But while he works his hardest to prepare both at the Gym and on the Track, a whole slew of behind the scenes work has gone into make him successful for the 2011 Endurocross season.

Sponsorship will be key to having a competitive year in the Geico/AMA Endurocross Championship hunt, and as any racer knows, having the best equipment plays a key role in getting yourself up on the podium. With support from across the industry, Jacob Argubright and his 2012 Off Road Support Kawasaki have the odds at their highest for an impressive performance at the 2011 X Games this weekend.
Kawasaki of Simi Valley stepped up to the plate with a brand new race bike, and although it looks great right out of the box, Mechanic Ed Villanueva will have his work cut out for him if he wants to have the bike ready to race come Sunday morning.
"What people don't understand is that we basically rebuild the entire bike to make it race ready. Everything from suspension to tires, and from the footpegs to an exhaust system must be replaced to make the bike competitive against all of the factory teams. "
Over the next 24 hours "Eddie V" will completely rebuild the bike so that Jacob can break in the motor and have it ready to go for the X games. With help from FMF Racing, Pro Moto Billet, Fastway, Rekluse, BRP, IMS, Kal-Gard, UFO Plastics, Dirt Digits, Dunlop Tires, and of course Travis from TBT Racing, the 2012 Kawasaki will be transformed into one of the fastest, lightest, most aggressive off road race bikes in the industry.
"I really can't thank the sponsors enough. From the pipes that the FMF team sent, to the awesome accents that the bike will have from the guys at Pro Moto Billet, I know that I will have one of the best bikes out there this weekend. The funniest part is that I was planning on racing my old '09 250F, but I came home from the gym this morning and John from KSV had the bike sitting there in the garage to surprise my dad and I. I can't wait to show the world what Endurocross is all about and there is no better way of doing it then through an event like X Games!"
Watch the X Games live all weekend on ESPN and ESPN2 with the Endurocross action starting at 9PM Eastern. Visit www.jacob911.com for updated info and photos from the 2011 X Games weekend.
Buemi handed five-place grid penalty for Hungary
After a post-race investigation, the stewards decided the Swiss driver was at fault for the accident with Heidfeld, which occurred on the approach to chicane. Although Buemi managed to continue, the German, whose Renault made contact with the right-rear tyre of the Toro Rosso as he attempted to overtake, retired from the race.

WSBK: Melandri Re-Signs with Yamaha for 2012
Replacement Muggeridge replaced by Lai
Karl Muggeridge, who had been due to replace injured Castrol Honda rider, Ruben Xaus, at this weekend's ninth round World Superbike encounter at Silverstone in the UK, has been forced to withdraw from the event. Currently on vacation with his family in northern Italy, Muggeridge was training on a mountain bike on Tuesday when he crashed and sprained his right wrist. While no fracture was sustained, Muggeridge and his German HRP Honda team had no alternative but to withdraw him from the Silverstone event.
Australian Muggeridge is the reigning IDM German Superbike champion and currently lies second in the series with the next round scheduled for 7 August, just one week after Silverstone.
Despite the short notice, the Castrol Honda team has recruited Italian rider Fabrizio Lai to replace Muggeridge. The 32-year-old made his WSBK debut last season with the Echo CRS Honda team. A former 125 and 250GP rider and podium finisher, Lai is currently competing in the Italian Superbike championship on a CBR1000RR for the Echo Honda squad, to whom the Castrol Honda team is very grateful for his release.
Castrol Honda team manager, Ronald ten Kate, commented: "We're all very sorry for Karl, as we were really looking forward to working with him again this weekend. However, we understand that he needs to be fit for the next IDM round to fight again for the title. So, we have a replacement for Ruben's replacement, and we will make Fabrizio welcome and work hard with him to get the best result possible at Silverstone."

Vettel and Webber hit the Nrburgring in pair of Infiniti M sedans
Filed under: Motorsports, Hybrid, Sedan, Marketing/Advertising, Infiniti, Luxury, Racing

This past weekend, the Formula One circus rolled into Eifel for the German Grand Prix. And though it was campaigned once again at the Nürburgring, the race was held on the GP-Strecke. The infamous Nordschleife hasn't been used for F1 racing since the early 80s, when it was deemed too dangerous for modern open-wheelers. But while they were on site, championship leaders Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber and their sponsor Infiniti didn't miss the opportunity for a little wheel-to-wheel action around the Green Hell.
The Renault-Nissan Alliance's premium marque that powers Seb's and Mark's Red Bull race cars put the duo on the Norschleife in a pair of Infiniti Ms, but here's the kicker: while Webber got the keys to the M37s sport sedan, Vettel climbed into the M35h hybrid.
So which driver had the advantage? Considering that Infiniti claims that the M35h is the world's quickest hybrid sedan and its most powerful car on the market - hitting 62 mph from a standstill in 5.5 seconds versus the conventional M37s' 6.2 - it looks like Vettel was set to get the jump on his elder wingman once again. Follow the jump to watch the video footage to find out.

Motorcyclist runs from Bridge to Gantry in 7:26 blast around the Nurburgring
Filed under: Motorsports, Videos, Motorcycle

We've seen many cars take on Germany's famed Nürburgring, and it seems that automakers the world over enjoy using the Green Hell as a torturous test bed for new products. Drivers attempt to tackle 13 miles and 154 corners as quickly as possible. Cracking the 10-minute mark means you're not entirely ham fisted. Want to go even faster? Things start to get exponentially more difficult, but the world's fastest production sports cars run in the low- to mid-seven-minute range.
How do the two-wheeled folk stack up?
Not as well it seems, thanks in part to the bumpy surface and varied paving materials. That doesn't mean motorcyclists can't lay down impressive lap times, and one anonymous person in particular decided to see just how fast they could go.
Despite the traffic on the road, this skilled rider ripped off a rather impressive lap time. Starting the clock at the bridge, the clock was stopped at the gantry just seven minutes and 26 seconds later. Click past the jump to check out the video.

Honda Red Riders Take on Washougal and Canard Update

Honda News Release
Torrance, CA: The Washougal National in Washougal, WA, hosted round eight of the 2011 AMA Motocross Championship this weekend, and the Honda Red Riders battled through a tough weekend of racing on their CRF250Rs and CRF450Rs.

Trey Canard was the sole rider for the American Honda Racing squad, and after making an impressive return to racing last weekend by finishing third overall at Spring Creek, Canard had reason to be confident heading into his second Motocross event of his shortened season. He got a good start in moto one and was among the front-runners as he settled into third position on the opening lap. He maintained that position from start to finish to score his second podium in two rounds. Unfortunately, after getting a great start in moto two, Canard crashed hard while in third place and injured his leg, which drew out the red flags for the race. Unable to continue racing, he was taken to a local hospital for medical attention and released later that evening.
"Unfortunately, I suffered a new fracture to my left femur in the crash," said Canard. "It's definitely disappointing to get hurt, especially as I was feeling so good and loving the Washougal track. I guess the positive in the situation is, I'm glad it happened now and not later in the season as I have five months to make a full recovery and return to racing for the start of the 2012 Supercross Championship."
TwoTwo Motorsports Honda rider Chad Reed headed into round eight still feeling the effects from his huge crash last weekend at Spring Creek, where he left with a six-point lead in the championship. Aboard his TwoTwo Motorsports/American Honda Racing-prepared CRF450R, Reed suffered a bad start in moto one-he rounded the opening lap in 14th-yet he staged a hard charge to take the checkers in seventh spot. In the second race, he got a much better start and finished just shy of the podium in fourth place to earn fourth overall. Reed relinquished two spots in the championship standings over the weekend and now sits nine points behind the new points leader.
"I didn't have a lot in the tank this week," said Reed. "I'm definitely still feeling the effects of last weekend's crash. I'm looking forward to the upcoming weekends off to rest and recover before Unadilla. I might be a little wounded but I'm far from out. I'm confident I will bounce back to my usual self at the next round."
In the 250 class GEICO Honda's Justin Barcia finished a solid sixth overall with 4-10 moto finishes despite racing with a broken nose. Honda rider Darryn Durham joined Barcia inside the top 10, going 11-9 for ninth overall. GEICO Honda's Eli Tomac and Wil Hahn finished in 17th and 18th spots, respectively.

FIM Radiation Report In: Motegi MotoGP Round To Go Ahead As Planned
The long-awaited report from the FIM is in, containing a preliminary version of the report commissioned to investigate radiation levels at Motegi. As expected, the report finds no danger to health from radiation in and around Motegi, in line with all the other data coming in from Japan on radiation levels around the area, both official and unofficial. And as a consequence, the FIM and Dorna stated that there will be an announcement later this week that the Japanese Grand Prix at Motegi will go ahead as scheduled, barring any further serious incidents.
The report from ARPA, an independent Italian agency with expertise on environmental radiation, tested air samples, background radiation, and several food samples from around the Motegi circuit, and found both the air samples and background radiation to be consistent with normal levels, and comparable (actually slightly lower) than in the region around ARPA's offices in Vicenza, Italy. Food and drink samples were also found not to have measurable levels of Cesium contamination (the radioactive particle released by the Fukushima reactor), with the exception being one beef sample from cows in the Miyagi region. But even for that sample, the level found was very low, and well within the permitted level of contamination established by the EU for food coming from Japan.

Öhlins to debut aftermarket semi-active electronically adjustable suspension

Öhlins to debut aftermarket electronically adjustable suspension that will either integrate into existing OEM semi-active suspension setups, or a stand-alone system that uses the sensor inputs from existing OEM wiring
BMW’s ESA paved the way for electronic suspension, and Ducati’s DES took it a step further with customizable configurations for those adjustments. Now Öhlins is preparing to launch the first aftermarket electronic suspension package within the next few months, paving the way for a universal system that can be fitted to any bike that uses a CAN wiring system for communication between the various sensors. And it’s intelligent.

Motegi MotoGP: Radiation Doses Explained
One of the things that has come up again and again when discussing whether or not the MotoGP race should go ahead at Motegi is the levels of radiation that riders, teams, journalists and fans might potentially be exposed to, and the related dangers such exposure might bring. As radiation is one of the most poorly understood - by the general public, at least - of risks that humans are exposed to, it is helpful to visualize such exposure in some other way than with raw numbers alone.
In the aftermath of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, and the severe damage to the Fukushima nuclear plant, the extremely entertaining science and computer cartoon blog XKCD produced a handy chart illustrating the exposure produced by a range of activities. Here's the chart (click on the chart for a full-size, easy to read version):

2011 AMA Pro Superbike Laguna Friday practice report—Hayes quickest

The cancellation of the VIR round means that Monster Graves Yamaha's Josh Hayes needs to make every race count, so he took a step in the right direction by being quickest during opening practice for the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca round of the 2011 AMA Pro Superbike championship
MONTEREY, CA, JULY 22 – Monster Energy Graves Yamaha’s Josh Hayes saw his chances of eating into his championship points deficit diminished by the cancellation of the two mid-August races at Virginia International Raceway. Now there are three races remaining, Sunday’s race here at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and the two final rounds at New Jersey Motorsports Park in six weeks’ time. If Hayes is to have any hope of keeping the number one plate on the front of his blue and white Yamaha YZF-R1, he has to make every point count.
Hayes was fast in today’s lone Superbike practice session, but it wasn’t worth anything, officially. Unofficially it put him in good position for Saturday qualifying, when he stands to cut a point out of the 11 point lead (290 to 279) of Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Blake Young, and he hopes to take more out in the Superbike race that finishes the day on Sunday.

Hopkins on pole for Oulton Park BSB

American John Hopkins steals pole position in closing seconds with dramatic final lap at Oulton Park British Superbike Championship
California native John Hopkins provided a remarkable finish to qualifying for the second Oulton Park round of the British Superbike Championship when the Samsung Crescent Suzuki rider snatched pole position away from Swan Yamaha’s Tommy Hill on his final lap after time had expired. After failing to improve his lap time during the third and final Superpole-style qualifying session, Hopkins dug deep and managed to put in a spectacular lap that undercut Hill’s quickest lap by more than tenth of a second. Hill thought that he’d had pole position in the bag after his pit crew gave him the “P1” signal when he crossed the line for his last lap, only to be told as he made his way to the qualifying parc ferme that Hopkins had swiped it away on his final lap. "I really wanted the pole position this afternoon and I thought I might have had it,” said Hill. “I did two 1:35.2 laps with a bit of a gap and I thought I had it in the bag. On my last lap I had ‘P1’ on my board as I crossed the line with the checkered flag and when I came in I was second, but fair play to John (Hopkins).”
