Kawasaki’s Tom Sykes once again tops qualifying, this time at his home round by smashing the lap record three times en route to pole position
If new World Superbike rightsholders Dorna want to keep Superpole qualifying’s excitement going, they might want to figure something out to handicap Kawasaki’s Tom Sykes. The British rider has proven to be the man to beat in qualifying by scoring yet another pole position at his home round at Donington Park on Saturday. In grabbing the 15th pole position of his career (and his fourth in a row this year), Sykes went under the previous lap record—set by himself—in all three Superpole sessions, comfortably leading his rivals and never being threatened at any time. Aprilia’s Sylvain Guintoli, who is still leading the World Championship, could only come within a little less than half a second of Sykes’ time, with teammate Eugene Laverty another shade under three-tenths of a second back.
