Reigning World Champion sneaks past Crutchlow in final minutes to take top spot; Rossi third quickest for Yamaha sweep of top three
Yamaha executives were surely smiling after Thurday’s opening practice for the Qatar MotoGP race, as YZR-M1 riders swept the top three spots, separated by a mere 0.071 seconds. Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo managed to grab the top spot on the leaderboard with less than two minutes to go in the session, his 1:56.685 lap time pushing Monster Tech 3 Yamaha’s Cal Crutchlow off the top after the British satellite Yamaha team rider had held the point for the final 10 minutes of the opening MotoGP practice at Qatar. Crutchlow’s ascendance had pushed a resurgent Valentino Rossi from the top, with the Italian holding the top spot for the latter half of the session. Another half second back came Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez, with Ducati’s Andrea Dovisioso managing to keep GO&FUN Gresini Honda’s Alvaro Bautista, LCR Honda’s Stefan Bradl, and teammate Dani Pedrosa at bay.
