Round 1 of the FLEXX BARS / AMA Western Checkpoint Enduro Championship

2012 marked the start of something amazing! AMA District 36, AMA District 37 and the AMA Sanctioned Arizona Offroad Motorcycle Racing Association had stretched their arms out and came together in the dusty deserts of Southern California. Not only did Northern California's District 36 riders come out in force over 50 strong, but they also came out in dominance taking the top 3 spots on the podium. Smack dab in the middle of District 37's back yard.
Kenny Pedersen took both the Saturday family Enduro Overall and the Sunday 250 A win.
Northern California Native James Ptarcinski came down South to show 'em how its done.
With 345 riders starting Round 1, the series was already off to a great start. A tougher then usual first loop would pose no threat to the out of town riders, most of which all stayed right on time... "Actually, our first loops are much tougher" said D36's Ryan Boardman "its just.. ya know. Different. More Trees, less rocks, just different." Local Mini Desert Champion Rafa Orendian would finish the entire first loop only dropping 2 points aboard his 3 Brothers KTM 85 and would take home the 1 loop overall win for the second time in his young career.
The Second loop would be the haymaker for the day taking riders along some of the tightest ridges, through the narrowest rocks, weaving through the now famous "Mr. Toads Wylde Ride" and finishing up a huge ledged uphill. This is where most riders would lose the brunt of their time. Reigning Enduro Champion Ryan Kudla aboard his brand new 3 Brother KTM 300 XC-W would have his usual Gremlins at round 1. "Every year its something. I run out of gas, I lose my magnet, I get 'lost'... this year was no different" said Kudla "Not only did my Odo just die at the 2.9 marker I also lost my brakes the entire 2nd loop! I just keyed off my brother the whole time, but his odo broke on the first loop to so he was keying off a rider on the minute ahead of him!" Kudla would still do will finishing 9th overall on the day, normally a rough start but one that he should be used to by now.
All the while, James Ptarcinski of Sunnyville, Ca, 450 miles from his comfort zone, was out for a Sunday Ride. "This being my first D37 event, it went great for me! It was somewhat different at first though. After only racing D36 races up north, I've become so use to riding through trees on the course, it made it a little difficult to judge my speed out here. " said James " The whole course just seemed to flow really well for me and I didn't have one crash or even a tip over all day. Really just no mistakes." While Ptarcinski was out front, on minute 2, aboard his Motor Cafe of Sunnyvale backed KTM 250 XC the rest of the field was just playing catch up.
Taking the 2 loop overall was District 37 Desert Veteran Mike Whitcomb aboard his trusty KTM 300 XC-W. He would enjoy a 4 minute gap over 2nd overalls Garry Winnie followed closely by Mag Heavywight Rick Decarly. Proving that you dont have to be young to kick some butt!
The final loop of the event was a turn from the normal bike breaking, go as fast as you can, "hare and hound" loop that United MC is known for.. which riders both loved and hated. Some were looking forward to making up all the time in the tough stuff, others were glad to get to actually time keep and save themselves but everyone had a great time on the third loop! Coming into the final check only a handful of riders would zero the entire loop; Ryan Kudla, Nick Hamill and District 36's Joel Burkett. "The first 3 miles wide open in the sand I thought to myself what the hell am I doing here." said the 2 time D36 Enduro Champion "...as we got into the time keeping game of the enduro I had a lot of fun just staying on time and being on pace." Burkett would take his 707 Suspension, Mach 1 Motorsport KTM 300 to 3rd overall dropping only 5:314. Finishing in second overall and 1st A 250 would be Kenny Pedersen, another District 36 rider aboard his MSR/707 Racing Suspension backed YZ 250. "I think the new series is a great idea." said multi time D36 Enduro Champion Pedersen "Plus I'm happy to meet new people and make new friends."
Topping the podium would be Ptarcinski dropping 4:260 on the day, taking both the West Chec Overall win and the Vet 30+ win for D36! Rounding out the top 5 would be PK Racing's Paul Krause in 4th Overall taking 1st A Senior 40+ and another Northern California Local Jonothan Estes finishing 5th Overall and 2nd A Open.
Saturday's event was the first round of the Family Enduro series hosted by Training Wheels MC. Again, District 36 would come out on top with Kenny Pedersen taking the top spot a mere 5 seconds in front of District 37's 250 Champion Nick Hamill aboard his 3 Brother Husqvarna WR 250. "I really like this new bike!" exclaimed Hamill "The family enduro is the perfect place to warm up for the season, dust out the cob webs and do some on the course testing." Only a minute down was Distict 37's multi time champion Nick Blais who had spent the better part of 2011 taking the gold medal at the Family Enduros. With 90 riders ranging from the top riders in enduro to first time riders like 69 year old Tracie Montee - who was only on his new quad for the 3rd time - the Family Enduro series is growning to fill out a perfect riding weekend.
The new western regional series is a definite success after the first round bringing in riders from as far away as New York, Ohio, Australlia, Colorado and Arizona. Even better it brought out a lot of people that havent ridden an Enduro in years. That is the idea of the entire series... put on great events for great people and just have a GREAT TIME!
