BRD RedShift Price & Specs ? $14,995 (MX) / $15,495 (SM)

After several months of testing and refining the BRD RedShift electric motorcycle, pricing and technical specifications from BRD Motorcycles has just graced our inbox. Wanting to make sure the BRD RedShift SM & RedShift MX lived up to the company’s hype, BRD has been reluctant to quote exact figures and prices until the San Francisco startup was confident it could back up those announcements with actual product performance. True to our prediction at the time ...

Double-Header Race Report

Mid-August usually brings some good race action, but this weekend was an exceptionally huge one for off-road racing. Round #3 of the GEICO/ AMA EnduroCross took place in Indianapolis, Indiana on Friday, and then on Saturday and Sunday the inaugural Kenda Tennessee Knockout hard enduro went down in nearby Sequatchie, Tennessee. Both evens were impressive, unpredictable and full of excitement, as well as a few twists.

2012 Porsche 911 lops 13 seconds off predecessor's 'Ring time, quick as 997 GT3

2012 porsche 911 carrera 2

The Porsche 911 is dead, long live the Porsche 911. The German automaker's latest and greatest has taken to the Nürburgring where old marks have fallen hard. The 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S was sent through the Green Hell, where it promptly beat the time achieved by the prior 997 version by a whopping 13 seconds.

With a time of 7:40, the 2012 911 matches the mark set by the previous 911 GT3. If you happen to own a previous generation 911 GT3, we'll pause here for a moment while you go out to smash something with a hammer.

Back? Great. You shouldn't fret too much, because this just means the next-generation GT3 should be a land rocket capable of blistering the surface of the 'Ring. GT2 guys, your numbers are still safe... for now.

Husaberg Press Release

Husaberg Factory rider Mike Lafferty put in an impressive 6th place finish at the eleventh round of the GNCC Series held in Somerset, PA.

The rocky Pennsylvania course proved perfectly suited for Lafferty and his technical skill set. The Husaberg rider got a great jump off the start but slid out in the second corner of the race. He picked up his bike in dead last position and put in the most amazing lap of the day to come from last position to leading the group as they neared the one lap mark. The rocky terrain was not a stumbling block for Lafferty who showed his blazing speed early on the race to pass every rider before the completion of the first lap. Suzuki rider Josh Strang was able to move around Lafferty to take over the lead position just as they crossed the one lap check point while Lafferty remained in 2nd.

Behind Lafferty was a train of four other riders including Kailub Russell, Charlie Mullins, Nate Kanney and Paul Whibley all fighting for that lead position. Lafferty dropped to 6th place on the second lap and remained close to the top five riders. On the third lap, Lafferty began complaining of a stomach cramp that slowed him down during the middle of the race.

Lafferty, who switched to the Husaberg TE250 two-stroke machine for this event, spoke wonders about the bike after the race. "It was so light and easy to handle throughout the whole race. In rocky events, it is very hard to hold on for three hours and riding this lightweight bike made it easier to get through the tight sections while also causing less fatigue on my arms."

Lafferty held his 6th place position for the next five laps to finish 6th overall for the day over seven minutes ahead of the 7th place ride of Rory Mead. The sixth place result marks Lafferty's second best GNCC finish this season. He plans to race the remainder of the GNCC Series as well as the final National Enduro on his TE250 two-stroke.

Power Wheel Racing needs your help

Filed under:

power wheels racing series

Our favorite racing series just got a bit of competition, and it comes in a surprising form. We're not saying this will take the place of the 24 Hours of LeMons, but it's certainly captured our attention. Called the Power Wheel Racing Series, this form of electrified motorsports pits racers against each other as they pilot uprated kids toys around a track.

To put it rather simply: this is awesome, and we want in.

The series needs a bit of help, however, to go from a singular event into a full-blown season for 2012. The minds behind the mayhem have turned to Kickstarter, and they are accepting your cash in exchange for a differing level of gratitude based upon how much you're willing to plunk down.

If you need some convincing, click past the jump to learn more about the series. After that, head over to Kickstarter and show this fledgling race series some love.

2011 Imola World Superbike Sunday Round Up: Anything Can Happen In Racing, And It Usually Does

Days like Sunday at Imola always remind me of what Nicky Hayden says after particularly poor qualifying sessions: "That's why we line up on Sunday; you never know what's gonna happen." Two championships were up for grabs at Imola on Sunday; one looked a dead cert to be wrapped up by Sunday night, while the most likely scenario for the other is that the race would still be open after the second World Superbike race.

It didn't quite work out that way. Sure, Carlos Checa and Chaz Davies are still the hot favorites for the World Superbike and World Supersport titles, but the dreaded "events" got in the way of seeing a double coronation in Italy. Every Sunday brings a surprise, and this Sunday was no exception.

2011 World Superbike Imola race report/results—Rea and Checa split wins
2011 World Superbike Imola race report/results—Rea and Checa split wins - Sport Rider Magazine
Althea Racing Ducati's Carlos Checa can clinch the 2011 WSBK championship at the next round at Magny Cours France with his 3-1 score at Imola

Carlos Checa came very close to sewing up the World Superbike title in Ducati’s home country with a third in Race One and a victory in Race Two at Imola, but the champagne will have to wait until the two remaining rounds. Checa now carries a commanding 97-point lead heading into Magny Cours, France, next weekend, and all he needs is another three points over second-placed Marco Melandri, who could only muster a disappointing 8-6 tally at Imola.

Castrol Honda’s Jonathan Rea completed his long recovery from injuries this season to take a hard-earned victory in Race One. Rea took over from early leader Tom Sykes on the Kawasaki on lap four, and appeared as if he might pull away to an easy victory, using the Ten Kate-designed ride-by-wire throttle system on the Honda to good effect. Pata Racing Aprilia’s Nori Haga had other ideas however, and soon closed up on Rea. But despite hounding the Northern Irishman to the finish, Haga came up 0.111 seconds short at the flag. Checa had moved past Sykes to take third, and with nearest title contender Melandri struggling to eighth, took another step closer to the championship.

“Yeah, it’s an emotional day for me,” said Rea. “Because of last year ending my season at Imola with a very big injury (he crashed during Superpole, breaking his wrist and collarbone). So it’s a credit to all the people around me; my family, friends, girlfriend and my team to get us back to the top step. I used a lot of inspiration from the misfortune from last year to get back to the top. But massive ‘well done’ to Nori, he kept me honest the whole race, and sure had to dig deep at the end to try and get that win, but I’m so happy for me and my team, all the development they’re pushing my way.” When he was asked about stopping on the cool-down lap to kiss the pavement, Rea replied, “That’s the place I crashed last year. It devastated me, it was hard to pick myself back up, but we’re a strong team. It was just my way to say ‘cheerio’ to that part of the track.”

Rea looked like he was on his way to going two for two for the weekend, as he took the lead on the first lap and began building a lead. A faulty battery lead caused a misfire that forced him to drop out of the race however, handing the lead to Checa which the Spaniard wasted little time in taking advantage of, holding on to take the win from Haga and Aprilia Alitalia’s Leon Camier. “Yeah, it was a magic weekend,” said Checa. “We don’t automatically have the title, but it’s very close and we feel it already. We were really enthusiastic for the weekend. It’s a shame for Johnny because he was probably going to win. We were a bit lucky, but you know this year has been going so good, and here in Imola for us has been great. A really nice feeling in front of all the crowd. I want to say thanks to all the crowd because they really push hard and they really support us. And all the team and all the people who follow me throughout the year who believe in me.”

2011 World Superbike Imola Superpole qualifying report results—Checa on pole
2011 World Superbike Imola Superpole qualifying report/results—Checa on pole - Sport Rider Magazine
Carlos Checa grabbed his sixth pole of the 2011 World Superbike Championship season at the Imola circuit during Superpole qualifying on Saturday for tomorrow's races

World Superbike Championship points leader Carlos Checa took another step closer to the title by grabbing his sixth pole postion of the 2011 season at the historic Imola circuit in Italy on Saturday. With the Imola circuit’s tight “bus stop” chicane right after the start, being in front of the carnage that often ensues in the races’ first two turns is crucial to a good result, and the Althea Racing Ducati rider is in the best position possible in his quest for his first WSBK title. Castrol Honda’s Jonathan Rea was the only rider with a chance at unseating Checa from pole, but his effort as time was winding down in the 10-minute Superpole 3 session came up 0.078 seconds short. Pata Racing Aprilia’s Nori Haga continued his late season form by qualifying third, with Tom Sykes on the factory Kawasaki completing the front row.

The only rider with a decent chance at competing with Checa for the title didn’t even make the final Superpole cut. Marco Melandri will start from the third row on his Yamaha, and will have to make a great start in order to be with the leaders on the first lap. “We improved the race pace quite lot and did a good run with race tyres in the second qualifying session which went quite well,” said Melandri. “Unfortunately the qualifying tires in Superpole didn’t work out at all. We struggled from chattering in both in the second session and after half a lap the tire lacked performance and I wasn’t able to improve my times. It’s a pity as we have a good race pace but now we’ll have to push hard to get in front on a track where it’s not easy to overtake. "

“Yeah, Johnny (Rea) was very strong this whole weekend,” said Checa. “We knew it was going to be hard to beat him in the Superpole because he is normally quite fast in one lap. Basically we’ve been struggling with the qualifying tire, so we put the race tire on and we’ve been able to improve. I put in a really good lap, clean lap, no mistakes, it was fantastic; when I was close to the end, I thought it was going to be fast but I didn’t know how good a lap, and then I saw it. Then I didn’t know if anyone was going to be able to improve on it; for sure Johnny was the only one I thought, and at the end he was very close. But anyway, for us it’s very good to start in front, especially at this track.”

Dungey, Baggett and Villopoto Secure Seventh Consecutive Victory, 22nd Overall

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (September 23, 2011) - For the seventh consecutive year, Team USA has won the FIM Motocross of Nations. Ryan Villopoto, Ryan Dungey, and Blake Baggett - all multi-race winners in the 2011 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship - were able to overcome wet weather, a dynamic racetrack in the French town of St. Jean d'Angely, and tremendous competition from the rest of the world's fastest motocross athletes to capture the coveted Peter Chamberlain Trophy. With their backs against the wall going into the third and final moto, Villopoto and Dungey finished first and second, taking the overall win in dominant fashion.

"We knew where we stood," said Villopoto, Monster Energy Kawasaki's reigning AMA Motocross and AMA Supercross Champion, of the dramatic last-moto efforts required of himself and Rockstar/Makita Suzuki's Dungey. "If we went 1-2, we were going to win. We knew we could do that, or we would need some luck. We knew we could ride better. We did it all year."

Dungey, Baggett and Villopoto celebrate another triumphant effort.

KTM North America Press Release

September 23, 2011

KTM Motorsports is proud to officially announce Ken Roczen and Marvin Musquin as its 2012 Red Bull/KTM Factory 250cc Team riders contesting the AMA Supercross Lites Championship and AMA Pro Motocross 250cc National Championship Series.

Roczen, who competed in the AMA West Supercross Lites Championship last season, will return to the U.S. full-time this year to compete in both series aboard his 250 SX-F. The German rider was most recently crowned as the 2011 MX2 World Champion. He is the youngest rider in the series history to win the title.

The 17 year-olds fan base grew significantly last year after fans witnessed his energetic, youthful personality and unique riding style during the Supercross season. He proved he was a top contender in the Lites Supercross class with a podium at both the Anaheim 2 and Salt Lake City rounds as well as a race win at the season finale in Las Vegas. Furthermore, he proved he could easily transition between classes when he switched to the 350 SX-F and competed in two of the Supercross class rounds.

"I am so excited to return to the states to race. I really learned a lot last year during the Supercross season and began to turn my season around at the final races. I am hoping to pick up where I left off, and with any luck, stand on the podium a lot next season," remarked Roczen. "I am also equally excited about the outdoor series as I have never raced motocross in the United States and I am looking forward to the new competition and new tracks."

Joining Roczen on the Red Bull/KTM Factory Team is 2-time MX2 World Champion, Marvin Musquin. The French rider relocated to California last year to compete in the Supercross and Motocross Championships but was plagued with injury early on. A torn ACL left him out of the Supercross competition, a series he is most looking forward to for 2012.

ktm red bull ktm racing team, lucas oil motocross championship, dirt rider magazine,

"Supercross racing has always been my favorite form of racing. I am so excited to race in the stadiums in front of the crowds. I love the big jumps and fast pace of Supercross racing and can't wait for the first round," stated Musquin.

Musquin will also compete in the 250cc Motocross season for his second year in the U.S. He was again plagued with injury at the beginning of the 2011 motocross season but made up for his absence in the final two rounds of the series where he landed on the podium twice. Musquin is currently preparing for the 2011 Monster Energy Cup race in Las Vegas, NV where he will compete in the premier class aboard a 350 SX-F.

"We are excited to have two well-decorated and talented riders on our roster for the 2012 season," said Red Bull/KTM Team Manager Roger DeCoster. "As past champions, both riders have proved they have the discipline and skill to win races and be title contenders. The entire team is excited for next season and we are looking forward to a very successful year."

The World Superbike and World Supersport classes will make their first visit to Russia in 2012 at the new Moscow Raceway circuit via a 10-year agreement signed by WSBK rightsholders Infront Motor Sports and the Russian promotional company hosting the event

World Superbike Championship rightsholders Infront Motor Sports have signed an agreement with a Russian promotional company to host a round of the 2012 World Superbike calendar at a new circuit still under construction just on the outskirts of Moscow. The accord is a ten-year agreement that will see the World Superbike and World Supersport classes visiting the “Moscow Raceway” circuit that is slated to be finished in a few months, having been designed by F1 favored son Hermann Tilke. The 2.5-mile, 15-turn circuit is scheduled to host the WSBK event on August 26, 2012.

"In the last few months we have been working very closely with Alexander Yakhnich and his team and we have managed to define all the details in preparation for the arrival in Russia of the championship in 2012,” said Infront Motor Sports CEO Paolo Flammini in a press release. “To hold a race in Moscow, in the very first year, was our declared intention and we are therefore extremely satisfied with the choice of Moscow Raceway, a truly state-of-the-art circuit that is in an advanced phase of construction, and which will be completed in a few months time. World Superbike will be the first championship to arrive in Russia, a demonstration of Infront Motor Sports' commitment to opening up important new markets for motor sport".

"We are delighted to be able to officially represent such a prestigious championship as Superbike in Russia,” stated Alexander Yakhnich, CEO of YMS Promotion Ltd in the press release. “We know that months of hard work lie ahead of us for the organization of the event but we are certain that in August everything will be ready to give a worthy welcome to the Superbike and Supersport Championships and their protagonists. The commitment of my group for the development of motorcycle sport in Russia will also be shown by the debut of the Yakhnich Motorsport team in the 2012 FIM Supersport World Championship with Russian rider Vladimir Leonov and another rider still to be decided".

Horex VR6 Delayed Until Spring 2012 ? Supercharged Version Later

German upstart Horex has announced that production of the Horex VR6 will be delayed from its planned start later this year, and instead will start production in Spring 2012. Citing part supply issues, particularly with the bike’s supercharger unit, Horex will first make available its 160hp normally-aspirated version, while the 197hp supercharged version will start production in late 2012. The supply chain issue stems from the rebounding of the European OEM parts suppliers industry, who ...

Taddy Blazusiak Media Service 2011 – News Release

Polish indoor enduro star Taddy Blazusiak has claimed his fourth consecutive win of the 2011 AMA Endurocross series, placing his 350cc KTM Enduro Factory Team machine on the top step of the podium in convincing style in Ontario, CA. The dominant rider in the championship heading into the event, Blazusiak again showed why he’s the rider to beat as a near perfect night saw him top the Hot Lap session, win his qualifying heat race, before comfortably claiming the win in the main event.

Spending little time on a bike following his participation in the penultimate round of the Enduro World Championship held in Andorra, Taddy arrived at the fourth round of the Endurocross tour with high hopes of maintaining his winning ways. The fastest rider on track from the first practice session, Blazusiak remained as the night’s fastest competitor topping the Hot Laps session, comfortably winning his heat race, before firing out of the start gate and into what would soon become a comfortable lead in the main event. Making one mistake mid-way through the final, Taddy needed less than two laps to rebuild his lead, claiming the chequered flag some 10 seconds ahead of his nearest rival. Taddy now holds a 39-point advantage at the top of the 2011 Endurocross points standings.

Round five of the 2011 Endurocross series takes place at the National Western Complex in Denver, CO, on October 1.

Taddy: “Just about everything was great this weekend, I really couldn’t have asked for anything more. From the start of the first practice session I felt great and the more time I spent on the track the more I was sure I could win.
I’d not spent too much time on a bike after the Enduro World Championship race I competed in two weeks ago but it didn’t make any difference to my riding. The first and second practice sessions both went really well and then I got a time two seconds faster than anyone in the Hot Laps session, which was great. I knew that as long as I didn’t make any mistakes I’d be able to claim another main event win. Things went well in my qualifying race – my bike was awesome and I felt really strong. Getting the holeshot in the main event really made things much easier for me. I made one silly mistake, which meant I lost the advantage I’d opened up, but it wasn’t long before I was clear out front again. It was a great night. I have a pretty good points lead now so I’ll just keep pushing at the next round and see what happens.”

After their little “incidents” at Darlington this past weekend, Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch have both been fined 25,000 and put on probation for the next four “points paying” races. I have heard that Kevin Harvick has decided to run this weekend’s truck race, so he could give some payback then and not violate his [...]

Colton Haaker and Cody Webb round out the podium! - News Release

Ontario, CA (September 17, 2011) - The 2011 GEICO AMA EnduroCross series, presented by Lucas Oil made a first time stop at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California and KTM's Taddy Blazusiak took the win in front of a large, enthusiastic crowd. Lucas Oil backed Colton Haaker took second ahead of factory Beta backed Cody Webb. Kyle Redmond finished fourth and Geoff Aaron finished fifth.

The afternoon got started with the 30 Expert riders doing a single lap against the clock running in reverse order of the current point standings to determine gate picks for the heat races. There is a lot of bragging rights on the line and Blazusiak was the final rider to take the track and set the fast time ahead of Mike Brown and Haaker.

Blazusiak, Brown and Aaron each won their heat races to take the best gate picks for the main event. Wally Palmer was among the top riders not make the main after a nasty tumble during his heat race. Jacob Argubright, Kevin Rookstool, Ryan Sandoval and Matt Oppen were among the other riders to miss the cut for the main event.

Blazusiak jumped to the front of the field at the start followed closely by Aaron and Haaker. Aaron stalled his bike on the first lap and then Haaker immediately closed in on Blazusiak and stayed close for the first half of the race before slowly losing touch. Redmond, Gary Sutherlin and Webb were equally close to Haaker and it appeared that any one of them could have taken second before Haaker started to pull a little gap. Sutherlin made a mistake to fall from contention and Webb applied pressure to Redmond to finally make the pass just before the white flag; taking the final podium spot. Aaron managed to work his way back up to fifth ahead of Monster Kawasaki's Justin Soule. Sutherlin held on for sixth ahead of Brown, who had a pretty tough main event and lost a lot of ground to Taddy in the championship after coming into this event in second. Keith Sweeten, the youngster from Oregon finished ninth ahead of Destry Abbott and Rory Sullivan, who is a very accomplished Motocross and Off Road rider made his first main event after three years of trying finished 11th after a big crash in the rocks.

In addition to the Expert class, EnduroCross events include Open Amateur, Vet 35+ and TrialsCross classes. The top two finishers in each class also earn a spot in the Vegas Grand Championship Finals for each respective class. The Vet class was won by Todd Sciaqua over Kurt Nicoll and Baja Legend Johnny Campbell. The Amateur class was won by Eric Rhoten with Matt Crouch and Max Gerston rounding out the podium. The TrialsCross class had an amazing finish with Andrew Oldar making a last second pass on Mike Damm that ended with both of them crashing as they crossed the finish line. Twelve year old Ty Cullins took third.
