DAYTONA BEACH, FL, MARCH 12 – The most bizarre day in the history of American road racing ended as it should have, bizarrely.

The 70th running of the Daytona 200 mile race ended up covering only 143.42 miles; in reality only the last 52.65 miles counted.

The first attempted start of the Daytona SportBike curtain-raiser ended on the 28th of 57 laps when the AMA issued a mandatory stop for a front tire change. The mandate had been ordered after several riders, including Roberson Motorsports Jake Holden, showed chunking and blistering on the left side of their Dunlop 211GP SportMax Daytona specials. Holden chunked the first tire before his first pit stop at 15 laps and as more riders pitted in the 15 to 20 lap window more and more failures were discovered. Dunlop motorcycle tire boss Mike Buckley picks it up from there.
