There are a few common ways to crash a motorcycle while racing - most often either the extremely dangerous high-side or the usually-little-more-than-ego-scraping low-side incident - but, when dealing with machinery pushed to the very edges of its mechanical abilities, there's always the outside chance of catastrophic equipment failure leading to an astonishing accident.

Such was the case for Maxime Berger, who crashed out of the first race during the second round of World Superbike action at Donington Park in rather spectacular fashion. As you can see from the image above and the video after the break, Berger's privateer Ducati somehow managed to completely shed half its normal allotment of wheels... and in the case of a motorcycle, that's a very bad thing indeed.

Click past the break for a video of the incident, along with a brief press release from the Supersonic Racing Team that includes a quote from Berger himself. Oh, and better luck next time, Maxime!

2011 Chevrolet Volt
2011 Chevrolet Volt at Mazda Raceway - Click above to watch video after the jump

There are plenty of adjectives in the English language we could use to accurately describe the 2011 Chevrolet Volt. Innovative, clever and efficient all readily leap to mind, but sporty doesn't quite make the top of the list. That didn't stop the crew from TheFutureIsElectric.com from taking the new wonder child from General Motors to Laguna Seca for a couple of quasi-quick laps around the world-famous track. Fortunately for all of us buzzing around the Internets, the crew captured the whole shebang via the glory of high-definition video.

With nothing but the sound of some wind buffeting and the tortured screams of the low-rolling resistance Goodyear Assurance tires, the Volt is more or less capable of keeping pace on the hallowed tarmac. It's far from able to match speed with hardware from Porsche or Lotus, but we're guessing that's beyond the point all together. Hit the jump to see the action for yourself.

At any of the myriad Le Mans series races around the world, you're guaranteed to see more than a proportional sampling of Porsches. Those are usually one manner of 911 GT3 or another; less so Panameras and Cayennes, but the latest additions to the American Le Mans Series paddock are exactly those.

The Porsche Panamera Turbo has been selected as the official safety car for ALMS, outfitting a stock model with a dome light and special paint scheme. It's joined in its duties by a set of Cayennes that will act as medics' emergency response vehicles, a task to which the Porsche SUV is already perfectly accustomed. See for yourself in our high-res image gallery below.

Final practice - Vettel storms to the top

Just as it seemed that Mark Webber had once again done enough to head a practice session in Albert Park, his Red Bull team mate Sebastian Vettel came roaring home to wipe 0.857s off the Australian's lap time.

Webber's 1m 25.364s was threatened by Lewis Hamilton's 1m 25.553s for McLaren, which itself undercut team mate Jenson Button's 1m 25.567s. But then as it looked like the leading cars were really closely matched, Vettel gave a chilling demonstration of the Red Bull RB7's potential with 1m 24.507s, far and away the fastest lap of the weekend thus far.

CHINO, CA (March 21, 2011) - Yoshimura-backed teams showed off the performance advantage of their Yoshimura products by dominating the 11th round of the 2011 AMA/FIM Supercross Championship at EverBank Field in Jacksonville, FL. The Rockstar Makita Suzuki and Honda Racing supercross teams dominated the podium after an exciting night of racing.

Team Rockstar Makita Suzuki's Ryan Dungey rode a strong race aboard his all-powerful Yoshimura-equipped Suzuki RM-Z450, claiming a third-place podium finish in the 20-lap main event. Teammate Brett Metcalfe sat out once again to continue his recovery from recent crashes in Atlanta and Daytona. Metcalfe is hopeful to return to action at next week's event in Toronto.

Dungey rode determined in practice, grabbing the second fastest time in timed qualifying. After a good start in his heat race, Dungey's RM-Z powered him to the front for a convincing win. After a decent start in the main, Dungey was able to work his way up to third position by the end of the first lap. Dungey rode tenaciously on his RM-Z450 but couldn't quite catch the leaders and crossed the line, claiming a third-place podium finish. Dungey's consistent results have paid off, as the Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider now sits third in the championship points race.

"All in all, today was a good day," said Dungey. "My Rockstar Makita Suzuki felt great, practice was good, and the bike settled in really well too. Going into the night race, I got a good start in my heat race and got the heat win. In the main, I got caught up in the pack a little bit but was able to work up to third. I was trying to gain on the leaders, but I just couldn't make up enough time and then made a pretty big mistake on my part. Overall, I think it was a great night and big step in the right direction. I'm looking forward to Canada. It's a big stadium and the track layout is pretty amazing there. It will be good to go to another country as well. Hopefully we can get good starts and put ourselves in a good position there."

American Honda Racing's Trey Canard won the supercross race, recording his second supercross-class win in his rookie season aboard his Honda CRF450R, while GEICO Honda's Justin Barcia came out on top and scored his second victory of the season aboard his CRF250R.

After finishing second in his heat race, Canard got away to a good start in the main event, moving into the lead on the opening lap. Once out front, Canard held on to his lead for the majority of the race until fellow Honda racer, TwoTwo Motorsports' Chad Reed, made a pass for the lead during the closing stages of the race. Canard retaliated and passed Reed that same lap to resume control out front and take the victory for the second time this season.

"I got a great start in the main tonight, which I'm pumped about because starts are something I've worked really hard to improve. And I'm ecstatic to get my second win of the season," said Canard. "I was really fast on most areas of the track, but the whoops were a thorn in my side tonight. However, I definitely made up time by keeping low over the jumps and scrubbing hard. Reed was fast through the whoops, and he was there to capitalize on my mistakes. We had a good battle late in the race in which he passed me, and I got him right back. We battled to the very end, and I'm just stoked to put the American Honda Racing Team on top for the second time this season, plus it's awesome to see Honda finish one-two on the podium."

Canard's fill-in teammate Cole Seely finished sixth in his heat race, and after getting a mid-pack start in the supercross main had worked his way up into seventh position when he went down on lap five. Losing a lap in the fall, Seely recovered to finish a hard-fought 15th overall.

The next stop of the 2011 AMA/FIM Supercross Championship for the Yoshimura-backed teams is Saturday, March 26th, at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, ON, Canada.

KTM's Successful Weekend - News Release

Bobbit Cajun, full fmf, ktm, podium, enduro, news release, successful weekend, dirt rider magazine

The Factory FMF/KTM Racing Team had their best weekend so far this season when all three team riders landed on the podium at the second round of the Rekluse/AMA National Enduro Series in Forest Hill, LA.

FMF/KTM rider and reigning National Enduro Champion, Charlie Mullins, won the first three tests by a slim margin over teammate Russell Bobbitt. Also remaining close was the third member of the team, Cory Buttrick.

The three teammates continued to turn in impressive times throughout the six tests, pulling away from the other riders. In the final three tests, Bobbitt took his turn at the front of the pack winning the fourth and fifth tests. At the start of the sixth test he and Mullins were only one second apart. Unfortunately, Mullins suffered a crash in that section and allowed Bobbitt to run away to an easy win. Mullins finish time earned him 2nd overall while Buttrick would round out the podium in 3rd.

In addition, to the three KTM riders on the podium there were a total of six KTM's in the top ten, marking a great day for the FMF/KTM Team and KTM brand.

"We are very excited with the teams finish today. We know we have the best riders and they are all capable of being on the podium each weekend and they proved that today," remarked FMF/KTM Team Manager Antti Kallonen.

Next Event: Kalgary, TX - April 3, 2011

Jet-powered Dodge Caravan
Jet-powered Dodge Caravan - Click above to watch video after the jump

There are two ways to do jet-powered vehicles. On one hand, you have the deliciously simple and effective method of strapping a used jet engine to a car or truck, and letting the thrust do the rest.

On the other, slightly more complicated side, you can attach a turbine to a shaft drive, translating the thrust to the rear wheels via a differential. Both are viable, albeit expensive, ways of adding jet propulsion to your car. But which is faster?

SPEED took it upon itself to find out, pitting a thrust-powered Chevrolet S-10 against a shaft-driven Dodge Caravan. The Caravan uses a helicopter engine hooked to its rear wheels in conjunction with its standard gas engine up front. The truck relies solely on good, old-fashioned thrust. Click past the jump to see who's faster over an eighth-mile drag strip.

Practice One - Webber leads Red Bull one-two in Australia

The 2011 F1 season finally kicked off this morning in Melbourne's Albert Park - with a bang. Test driver Karun Chandhok got as far as Turn Four on his out lap before losing grip and cannoning into the wall, severely damaging his Lotus T128.

After that, it took more than half an hour before Pastor Maldonado in the Williams became the first man to set a lap time. Soon, however, Red Bull moved to the front as expected, with Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel taking it in turns to go fastest until the Australian slammed in a 1m 26.831s best right at the end to beat the German's 1m 27.158s by 0.327s.
