Ginetta releases official renderings of new G55
Filed under: Motorsports, Coupe, UK, Racing

The Ginetta G50 has so far been the star of the Ginetta GT Supercup, a one-make support series for the British Touring Car Championship. There's a brighter star on the way next year, though, when Ginetta introduces the G55. The new car will compete alongside the G50 in next year's races but in its own class and with separate a points system and podium ceremony.
To go along with its more aggressive looks and aero, the G55's Ford engine is 3.7 liters instead of the G50's 3.5, and it puts out 370 horsepower - 70 horses more than the G50. Other tweaks include beefier brakes front and back and a new exhaust. Current G50 owners can upgrade to the G55 for £25,000 ($39,219 U.S.), or privateers can buy the car new for £75,000 ($117,661 U.S.).
Ginetta's latest will be publicly unveiled at Autosport International on January 13 in Birmingham, England. Follow the jump for the press release, and get a couple of glimpses in the gallery of images below.

Monday Race Report: Dungey Wraps Up Title At Sandy Southwick

Dirt Rider was on the scene when Ryan Dungey wrapped up the 450 Motocross title at a rough and sandy Southwick round of the Lucas Oil AMA Motocross Series.
Ryan Dungey made history this weekend when he became the first rider to win both the AMA Supercross title and the AMA Motocross title in his rookie year. On a typical Southwick course - rough and severely whooped - Dungey put his Rockstar Makita Suzuki on top of the box with his seventh 1-1 sweep of the season in Moto-X 338's power-robbing sand, giving him more than enough points to wrap up the series title with two rounds remaining on the schedule. The 20-year-old native of Minnesota had more than a rugged course to overcome, however, as Aussie Brett Metcalfe threw down a serious challenge in moto one.

Pedrosa Unlikely To Require Further Surgery On Collarbone
While the crash at Motegi in which Dani Pedrosa broke his left collarbone was unfortunate, the aftermath has turned out to be much more difficult than expected. Pedrosa flew home from Japan on the Saturday, and underwent surgery to have a plate fitted to his collarbone. The Spaniard then attempted to race two weeks' later at Phillip Island, but that proved too much to ask of his recently repaired shoulder.
More worryingly, when Pedrosa tried to race at both Estoril and Valencia, a month after breaking his collarbone, the Repsol Honda rider was still reporting problems with his left arm. Pedrosa reported losing both strength and sensation in the arm, his arm going numb after a number of laps racing, but also even when he was asleep. The worst case scenario could have been that Pedrosa had suffered nerve or artery damage during the accident, and this was causing him the problems. Nerve damage, in particular, could potentially have ended his career.
Pedrosa underwent two days of tests to check for such damage earlier this week, and the good news is that no damage was found. The numbness and weakness that Pedrosa reported were merely the result of swelling from the damage caused by his injury. The Spaniard should not require any further surgery to correct the problem, with a period of rest and recuperation prescribed to solve the problem.

British Superbike Series - A Day at the Races

With the changes in AMA Superbike Racing, is the British Superbike Series now the preeminent national roadrace series in the world?
When I originally met up with Neil Hodgson a year ago on a winter day in New York's famous Katz's Deli in lower Manhattan, the British rider's '09 season had been a shambles, but he was looking ahead to '10. The shoulder than he'd injured in a horrific motocross accident wasn't coming around, and there was talk of another operation. Still, he was hopeful that his health would improve for his return to the British Superbike Championship.

Three for the Show as NASCAR Hits Homestead for Grand Finale
Filed under: Denny Hamlin, Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick, Chase for the Sprint Cup, NASCAR

MIAMI -- Dressed in a freshly pressed, button-down shirt, cleanly shaven and appearing slightly preoccupied, Denny Hamlin was the first to arrive for NASCAR's version of a title fight weigh-in -- a formal press conference with the Sprint Cup Series championship contenders in downtown Coral Gables.
Looking a lot younger than the 30 years he turned Thursday, Hamlin politely smiled but more often stared up at the ceiling as his two bearded, 30-something challengers -- four-time defending Cup champ Jimmie Johnson and veteran Kevin Harvick -- arrived and took their seats on either side of him, then seized every opportunity to take good-natured barbs at the birthday boy and each other.
Hamlin, who holds a 15-point edge over Johnson and a 46-point cushion over Harvick entering Sunday's season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, called the event "awkward'' because "there's all this s***-talking going on and we're like two feet away (from each other).''
"He definitely seems like the most nervous,'' Harvick said smiling and looking over at Hamlin.
"That's because I'm between you,'' Hamlin replied.
Actually, it's his position in front of them that has made this the most dramatic final race in the Chase for the Sprint Cup since NASCAR first instituted its 10-race playoff format seven years ago.
It is the closest-ever margin between first and second place entering the final race. And Harvick, who has the best average finishing position (8.4) among the three at the 1.5-mile Homestead oval, is still a factor compared to past years when a third-place driver was merely a mathematical technicality.

Marussia acquires stake in Virgin Racing F1 team
Filed under: Motorsports, Russia

As Red Bull Racing aptly proved this season, you don't need an automaker's backing to rise to the top of the Formula One ladder. Any consumer company with a popular image will do the trick. Virgin has been trying to follow in Red Bull's footsteps with the launch of its own F1 team, but as Richard Branson and company have discovered, it's more than most can chew. So it should come as little surprise that the upstart team has pursued - and secured - an automaker's support for next season and beyond. The surprise is at which company that is.
You may be familiar with Marussia Motors for such quirky creations as the B2 sportscar and the F2 crossover. Now the niche Moscovite automaker has teamed up with Virgin for an undisclosed stake in the F1 team. The long-rumored deal is expected to secure space for the newly christened Marussia Virgin F1 Team for several seasons to come. Since Marussia's road cars are powered by Cosworth-developed engines, that deal is likely to remain unchanged for the F1 team as well.
The partnership is only the latest step in Russia's increased involvement in Formula One, a trend that previously resulted in the Midland F1 team, the signing of Vitaly Petrov at Renault and the upcoming Russian Grand Prix. For its part, Virgin has yet to announce its driver line-up for next season, and with Petrov's seat at Renault still yet to be confirmed, we wouldn't be surprised to see the Russian rookie in red and black next season. Follow the jump for the official announcement.

WSBK 2011 Updates: Xaus At Ten Kate, Maxime Berger With Supersonic Ducati
With the 2010 season now long gone, the line up for the next World Superbike season is nearing completion. The biggest gap in the line up so far was the empty seat in the Ten Kate Honda garage, alongside Ulsterman Johnny Rea. There had been some speculation that Ten Kate would field only a single bike in the 2011 WSBK championship, after HANNSpree pulled out of the title sponsorship role, but that speculation appears to have been premature.
For Ten Kate announced yesterday that Ruben Xaus is to take the second ride for the Dutch Honda team, taking the place of Max Neukirchner, who departs to ride the MZ in Moto2. Xaus had been dropped from the BMW squad after a difficult year full - rather unsurprisingly, given Xaus' reputation - of crashes. Reading between the lines of the press release, it is clear that Xaus has been brought in to a development role, helping to bring on a Honda CBR1000RR that many observers believed had suffered a lack of development during the 2010 season.
Video: 1,243-hp Lingenfelter Camaro runs eight-second quarter mile
Filed under: Aftermarket, Motorsports, Coupe, Performance, Videos, Chevrolet

Prepare to have your concept of the laws of physics twisted by the guys and gals at Lingenfelter. The crew have turned their attention to building one of the meanest full-interior, fifth-generation Chevrolet Camaro drag cars on the planet. In order to hustle 4,075 pounds of General Motors muscle down the track, Lingenfelter has dropped in a fully built LS9 V8 with an Eaton supercharger and all the guts to match. The heads were fully ported and loaded with titanium intake valves and hollow, sodium-filled exhaust valves for the easiest breathing possible. Throw in a set of long-tube headers, a two-stage nitrous system and twin fuel pumps and you've got a lump good for a mind-boggling 1,243 horsepower.
Lingenfelter has unsurprisingly ditched the stock clutch in favor of an RPS triple carbon piece, and a unique 9.5-inch billet rear differential with a 4.10 gear puts power to both rear wheels.
By some miracle of driving prowess, John Ebert was able to wrestle this machine down the quarter mile in 8.99 seconds at 158 mph. Hit the jump to watch it happen.

Monster Energy Supercross Season Preview Show to Air on CBS Sports

Supercross Legends McGrath, Carmichael, Emig and Stanton Breakdown the Greatest Season Ever - Monster Energy Supercross news release
AURORA, Ill. (November 17, 2010) - Feld Motor Sport announced today that the Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, season preview show will air on Sunday, December 26 at 3:00 p.m. EST on CBS Sports, featuring a new format. The one-hour preview show will take fans through the highly anticipated story lines that are emerging as the 2011 season closes in on the gate drop of Anaheim 1 Saturday, January 8.
The Monster Energy Supercross season preview show is positioned almost perfectly for fans as it will lead out of CBS Sports' Sunday NFL coverage.
"We look forward to once again showcasing the best of Monster Energy AMA Supercross on CBS Sports in 2011," said Rob Correa, Executive Vice President, Programming, CBS Sports. "We have a long history with this exciting sport and the up-coming season looks to be one of the most anticipated in years."
To preview what's being called the greatest season in the sport's history, a panel of legendary AMA Supercross riders will breakdown the 2011 up-coming season and foreshadow the excitement that fans can look forward to from season opener in Anaheim to the season finale in Las Vegas. Defending AMA Supercross champion Ryan Dungey will stage his title defense against arguably the deepest field in supercross history.
Representing 16 AMA Supercross class championships, our panel of legends, including Jeremy McGrath, Ricky Carmichael, Jeff Emig and Jeff Stanton, will provide their analysis on the 2011 Monster Energy Supercross championship.
McGrath, who is the all-time winningest rider in supercross history with seven titles and 72 main event wins, says he can't remember a season with a field this talented.
"This is possibly the deepest field in the sport's history," said McGrath. "There has not been a season in a long time where so many different riders have the potential to win. I can't wait to get this season started. I am looking forward to being involved in this 'new' preview show format with the rest of the supercross greats."
Stanton, a two-time AMA Supercross class champion, has high expectations for the 2011 season.
"There are so many questions marks this year because you don't know who will step up and rise to the challenge," said Stanton. "There is a lot of uncertainty and that makes for a great season of racing. Personally, I hope that these young guys, like Trey Canard or Jake Weimer, surprise the veterans. Last year, Dungey proved he is a champion. Reed and Stewart are both champions and when you add in the rest of the field, it's exciting just to see how it will all unfold. The season preview show will give fans an in-depth look at what this amazing season has in store for all of us," Stanton added.
Five-time AMA Supercross class champion Carmichael says that the title chase in 2011 is wide open because anyone can win. Carmichael won the 2005 AMA Supercross class championship, which was billed as the perfect storm.
"This season could closely compare to the 2005 season, but I believe this one could edge it out if everyone stays healthy just because there are more guys that have a chance to actually win straight up and not because of a technicality."

Murrieta, CA - The five-man Bonanza Plumbing/FMF/KTM Off-Road Racing Team is prepped and ready for the big day as they are set to compete in tomorrow's 43rd Annual running of the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000.
The past few months the five member team has tirelessly been hard at work preparing their bodies and the machine for the long 1000 mile trek. The machine of choice is the KTM 530 XC-W. After much testing, and one 24-hour test the riders have the upmost confidence in their race bike and are now eagerly awaiting the green flag at tomorrow's race.
This year's Bonanza Plumbing/FMF/KTM Off-Road Racing Team members are FMF/KTM factory rider and the 2007 Hare & Hound National Champion David Pearson, multi-time Baja Champions Steve Hengeveld, Mike Childress and Shane Esposito along with the youngest member of this 'dream team' Ivan Ramirez.
Ramirez is a native of Mexico and a dubbed a 'guardian' to the KTM Team. "We are so thankful to have Ivan on our team. This is the first time I have raced Baja where we have a rider that can communicate with all of the promoters, race fans and officials. I feel like we already have an advantage," remarked Pearson. In the history of the Baja 1000 there has never been a Mexican citizen on top of the podium, hopefully the KTM team can make history!
