Yamaha Factory Racing's Jorge Lorenzo celebrates 26th birthday with pole position as numerous riders crash during session; Dani Pedrosa, Marc Marquez, Cal Crutchlow, Valentino Rossi follow
The rising afternoon heat and resultant high track temperatures played havoc with the Q2 MotoGP field during their qualifying session on Saturday at the Jerez circuit in southern Spain. Several top riders crashed during the 15-minute session as they pushed the limits in order to gain grid positions, but Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo had no such problems as he swiftly grabbed pole position as a nice 26th birthday present, turning in a lap in his second stint that was nearly three-tenths of a second quicker than closest competitor Dani Pedrosa. Repsol Honda’s Pedrosa was one of the riders who crashed during the session, which also included Cal Cruthlow and Valentino Rossi.
