Ecclestone mulling tennis-style Grand Slam races for F1

Bernie Ecclestone

Ever get the feeling that not every grand prix on the Formula One calendar should be worth as much as every other? Aside from the bragging points that go with winning a race like, say, the Monaco Grand Prix, maybe the most prominent races should be worth more championship points, too? So says Bernie Ecclestone, according to the latest reports.

The notoriously outspoken F1 supremo is always hatching new ideas on how to make the series more interesting, and his latest borrows from the world of competitive tennis. The four most important tournaments on the tennis circuit - the Australian Open, French Open, U.S. Open and Wimbledon - are not only more prominent in every way than any other, but they're also worth more points for the players who win them.

Since the current calendar of 20 races is the most F1 has ever seen and regarded as the most it could possibly accommodate, could awarding more points for a handful of iconic races be what the proverbial doctor ordered to mix things up? Maybe, but identifying which races would get the honor would be another matter. Out of 20 races, we'd pick Australia, Japan, Britain, Monaco, Canada and Brazil as the likely candidates. Is this a good idea? Have your own list in mind? Let's hear your thoughts in Comments.

Pro Taper News Release

Corona, CA – Pro Taper would like to congratulate Star Valli Rockstar Yamaha’s Ryan Sipes on returning to the top step of the podium. It had been since last year’s East Coast Lites series, but the likeable Kentucky kid rode 15 solid laps to beat out a stacked field of competitors in Seattle. Expect Ryan to build on this momentum and continue to put his Pro Taper equipped Yamaha out front at the remaining Supercrosses, as well as this summer’s Motocross championship.

Geico Honda’s Eli Tomac had an eventful night, but still managed to finish ahead of championship rivals and take back the West Coast Lites series lead. Eli currently sits four points ahead with two rounds left. Do not expect Tomac to ease up until the final checkered flag falls in Las Vegas.

Ryan Sipes’ winning combination:
EVO Handlebar – Carmichael Bend
RC Edition Half Waffle grips
Twister Throttle Tube

The West Coast Lites series continues this Saturday April 28th in Salt Lake City, UT. Be sure to tune in to Pro Taper’s social media sites for updates throughout the day.

Pirelli News Release

Seattle, Washington, April 23, 2012 – Privateer Gavin Faith made his team JGRMX/ Toyota/ Yamaha debut this weekend at CenturyLink Field in Seattle, Wash. for round 15 of the 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series. 52,731 fans gathered at the open-roof stadium, where an onslaught of rain last week left muddy conditions for riders to contend with this weekend.

As James ‘Bubba’ Stewart remains sidelined with a fractured hand, current second place contender Davi Millsaps joined Faith for a shortened practice run early Saturday. The duo rode on Pirelli Scorpion MX Midsoft tires. “With the softer conditions we faced in Seattle we opted to use Scorpion MX MXMS front and rear combination,” commented Josh Whitmire, Pirelli North America Off Road Manager. “The track builders did a fantastic job with the track and I have to say the dirt was really good.”

In the qualifying heats, Faith appeared secure for a qualifying position when he became tangled with another rider on the last lap, resulting in a last chance qualifier (LCQ). He was unable to achieve the start he needed to advance to the main event. Millsaps transferred directly from heat two. In the main event, Millsaps found himself mid-pack amidst heavy traffic to start. With continued consistency, he moved steadily forward throughout the race. Millsaps finished fifth, and remains second overall in series points.

With only two rounds left, Millsaps find himself in a close battle for podium position. Stewart is currently sixth overall and will require approval from doctors before he can return this season. “Our best wishes go out to James as he recovers from his injury.  We hope to see the #7 back on the track soon,” said Whitmire.

Round 16 of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship will be held April 28 at the Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah. The original broadcast will air on April 29 at 1:00 p.m. (EST) on CBS.

Spotter's Guide makes sense of the 2012 Formula One grid

Filed under:

2012 Formula One spotter's guide

While the top four teams - you know, the ones that will be winning most if not all of the grands prix this year - have kept the same drivers, the same engines, the same sponsors and the same colors as last year, this year's Formula One World Championship has seen plenty of changes on the grid.

Lotus and Caterham have finally solved their naming-rights dispute, and both changed both of their drivers - including former World Champion Kimi Raikkonen coming back to F1. Scuderia Toro Rosso also dumped both its drivers, as did HRT, and Williams axed one Brazilian (Rubens Barrichello) for another (Bruno Senna). Virgin changed its name to Marussia, and Force India sold nearly half the team to Sahara.

Can't keep track of it all? Fortunately, YankeeF1 has provided us with spotter's guide for easy reference, showing each of the teams, its car and its drivers, plus a calendar of the grands prix this season and the color-coded tires. Keep it handy next race Sunday and you might just be able to make sense of it all.

Watch an NHRA funny car explode in a four-wide drag race

Matt Hagan, the reigning NHRA Full Throttle Funny Car champ, kicked off this weekend's Four-Wide Nationals qualifying session at zMAX Dragway in North Carolina with a bang. Hagan's funny car dropped an intake valve into one of its cylinders about halfway down the track and exploded, launching bits of engine and funny car across three of the four race lanes.

Amazingly, Hagan suffered no injuries and managed to keep his car in its lane. Upon exiting the vehicle, he can be seen ripping a piece of the car off and throwing it on the ground in frustration. Turns out he has a right to be frustrated: This is reportedly the third year in a row that Hagan has been involved in an explosion at the Four-Wide Nationals.

Scroll down to watch video of the explosion from a couple different angles, as well as gifs of the explosion and his memorable reaction.

Denny Hamlin's win in the No. 11 last Sunday at Kansas meant the No. 11 was the winningest car number in Cup Series history, breaking a tie with the No. 43.
