 * To commemorate the return of the Red Bull Catalina Grand Prix and Yamaha's involvement with motorcycle racing, Motorcyclist magazine contributor John Stein is racing a replica of the same 250cc works bike that Fumio Ito raced in 1958. Check out these links to the original race footage from the 50s to see just how important the Catalina GP was to the international racing community: www.youtube.com and here www.youtube.com. "Massive thanks to each and everyone for inspiration, encouragement, parts, services and support in getting the Motorcyclist magazine Catalina Grand Prix tribute bike built in just 90 days," says Stein. "Finally was able to test at Zaca MX last Sunday and made the event drop off. Now fingers crossed for damage-free shipment, good weather on Saturday and a great article!"

* Although Ito-san did not win the 1958 Catalina GP, it provided proof of concept that Yamaha was ready to compete on the world stage. The 1958 winner was Bob Sangren... the only two-time overall winner for the race. Sangren returns to the Island as the honorary Grand Marshal this year. The honor roll of past Catalina GP winners includes: Walt Fulton in 1951, Nick Nicholson in 1952, John McLaughlin in 1953, Jim Johnson in 1954, Bud Ekins in 1955, Chuck "Feets" Minert in 1956 and Bob Sangren in 1957 and 1958

* Speaking of heroes and legends, Malcolm Smith's son Alexander is confirmed for Sunday's race and there are some rumors that his dad will be racing, too! Dana Brown, son of On Any Sunday producer Bruce Brown is also on the island working on a top-secret film project with The Motocross Files producer Todd Huffman.

* Beyond the great old bikes and legends returning to the GP, look for some modern day motorcycles and racers to make a splash. Baja 1000 winners Kendall Norman and Quinn Cody are racing, as is JCR/Team Honda hero Johnny Campbell. "I'm stoked to be part of such a historic race," exclaims 4-time Baja 1000 winner Norman. "I've heard so much about it... the pioneers of the sport racing old-school bikes in one of the most unique locations imaginable. It's great that we'll finish off the season with what's sure to be one of the most fun races of the year."
