Utah USA Round - statistics

Miller 2012

WorldSBK.com provides a quick round-up of the facts and figures from the sixth eni Superbike World Championship round at the Miller Motorsports Park circuit in the USA.

? Second career pole for Jakub Smrz after the one he posted in Misano, 2009. With an interval of two years and eleven months between his first and second pole, Jakub recorded the third longest wait in WSB history. Haga leads the way with three years and ten months from Albacete 1998 to Sugo 2002, while in second place we can find the 2003 world champion Neil Hodgson. He had to wait three years and three months from Donington 1997 to Brands Hatch 2000;
? Tenth front row start for Tom Sykes: this year he has always started from the front row;
? Best qualifying career result for Davide Giugliano, fourth, for the first time on the front row;
? 24th career win for Carlos Checa in race one, the fifth in Miller. The fastest lap data in this track from the Spaniard is even more impressive: he has posted seven fastest laps out of ten races run here. Carlos has also led 110 of the 206 laps run in Miller so far, leading no less than eight races out of ten;
? Marco Melandri equalled his best weekend in Superbike with a first and a second: the same results he scored last year in Donington, Aragon and Brno;
? Chaz Davies scored his best career result in race two, fourth.

Final practice - Rosberg leads, Maldonado crashes

Nico Rosberg staked his claim to Monaco fame on Saturday morning with fastest time in a final practice session that was run, against expectations, on a bone dry track in decent sunshine.

The Chinese Grand Prix winner took his Mercedes round in 1m 15.159s on Pirelli's super-soft rubber, but he was just 0.038s ahead of the supremely on-form Felipe Massa who was Ferrari's faster runner with 1m 15.197s

Supercross Team Seattle Race Report

Carlsbad, CA (April 23, 2012) - Qwest Field in Seattle, Washington played host to Round 15 of Monster Energy AMA Supercross this past Saturday night.  The Dodge, Sycuan Casino, Hart and Huntington, Bel-Ray Racing Supercross Team was excited to announce the addition of Tyler Bowers #36 to the team. Bowers joins Kyle Regal in this weekend's line up and will compete in the remaining races of the 2012 Supercross season.

The night started out well, with Bowers #36 placing eighth (8th) in Heat 1 and Regal placing sixth (6th) in Heat 2, giving both guys a place in the Main Event.  Tyler Bowers said "I'm still trying to get use to the bike.  I got into the Main and was riding in 12th, which was really surprising because I had such a horrible start.  I just kept charging.  I got crossed up and went off track into the tuff blocks. Tonight was OK, but it's not what I'm looking for.  I know if I get a little bit more time on the bike and get things going I'll get up into the top 10." Bowers finished the night in 16th position.

When asked how the experience has been so far riding for Hart and Huntington, Bowers said "It's been great.  There's no pressure here.  I put more pressure on myself.  It's really serious here but everyone knows that if we put in the work we're going to have the results."

Kyle Regal #74 had a great heat race and made it to the main. "I had a good gate pick; the same gate that I did in the Heat race.  In the Main, I got a decent start and got landed on after the first jump which bent my handle bar and clutch lever down and smashed my hand up a little bit.  I was running about eighth and got into it with another rider and lost all my rhythm.  From there I just had to ride the race out." Regal finished the night in 17th place overall.

The next Monster Energy AMA Supercross race will be held this Saturday, April 28th at the Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah. The season will wrap up the following weekend in Las Vegas at Sam Boyd Stadium.

Mallya yacht party opens Monaco weekend in style

The Cannes film festival may still be in full flow, but even Hollywood couldn't resist celebrating the opening night of the Monaco Grand Prix weekend on Thursday. Force India boss Vijay Mallya welcomed a who's-who of the silver screen and Formula One racing to the gangplank of his mega yacht, the Indian Empress, for his now traditional Monte Carlo party.

Shunning his peers further down the Cote d'Azur, Spanish actor and director Antonio Banderas was among the cinematic draws at the Indian-themed event. The star of Shrek sequel Puss in Boots, the Mask of Zorro and Evita talked shop with fellow actor Michael Fassbender, who will soon be seen in Ridley Scott's highly-anticipated Alien prequel, Prometheus.

Ken Block's Gymkhana 4 re-edited with less "Hollywood"

Filed under: , , , , ,

The fourth installment of Ken Block's Gymkhana series was aptly subtitled "The Hollywood Megamercial." We know Ken needs to sell some DC Shoes apparel to pay for these lavish drifting productions, but the sales pitch stole the spotlight from the action in Gymkhana 4. Ever wonder what the video would have been like without the special effects and clothing commercials?

It took them the better part of a year, but DC Shoes has finally released a bonus edit that removes the "Hollywood" parts of the video, leaving just the gymkhana parts that we all clicked Play to watch in the first place.

Cutting out the special effects and infomercial aspects shortens the video from a weighty 9:16 to a lithe and focused 5:11. The difference between the two vids is most apparent by comparing when the Ford Racing rally Focus leaves the starting line. Original video: 1:25. New edit: 0:09. Over a minute was saved just by cutting the clip of Ken Block on fire and nixing the opening credits for his wardrobe. Another two minutes was saved at the end by leaving the Bollywood dance on the cutting room floor.

Scroll down to watch the new bonus edit that lets the viewer better appreciate the skill required to perform such stunts, as well as the original version. You can also click here to watch a YouTube Doubler of the videos playing side-by-side.

2012 Le Mans MotoGP Sunday Round Up: Head And Heart

Funny how things turn out. On a weekend that looked like being overshadowed by one subject - Casey Stoner's shock retirement announcement and its repercussions - along came the rain and provided spectacle to cheer the hearts of racing fans of every persuasion. Rain offers new opportunities, and such opportunities light a fire in the breasts of racers being kept from running at the front under ordinary circumstances. At the same time, should that fire burn too fiercely, those same racers can fall prey to their own overarching ambition, and fall within sight of glory.

Sunday at Le Mans saw plentiful examples of both. In three outstanding, if rain-sodden races, the fine balance between head and heart that racing requires was demonstrated several times over. Riders took the chances on offer: those who wanted it too much suffered the consequences and crashed out ignominiously; those who did not want it enough floundered around miserably at the rear; those that got it just right were richly rewarded.

Fernando Alonso's Ferrari renaissance continued in Monaco on Thursday morning in the first practice session which was terminated nine minutes prematurely and not resumed after Heikki Kovalainen's Caterham laid a trail of oil in the tunnel following an engine failure.
