VIDEO: Horner aims to extend 'halcyon period'
Earnhardt Jr Out for Next Two Races
Chevy might've pulled out of NASCAR if it weren't for new Gen 6 car
Filed under: Motorsports, Coupe, Chevrolet, GM, Racing

We've been on the fence with NASCAR for some time now. On one hand, it's some of the closest racing anywhere in motorsports, with actual passing and door-handle-to-door-handle action as a matter of course. But on the other, it's become template racing - a personality-driven sport more about the drivers than any sort of loyalty to a particular automaker. The Car Of Tomorrow format really rammed that message home, with a racecar's identity coming down to little more than headlamp stickers slapped on the nose. That's not necessarily a bad thing in and of itself, but we've wondered for some time what's in it for the automakers, who pay big money to stay in a series that has had little increasingly little do with street car sales, let alone innovation.
Apparently General Motors was beginning to wonder the same thing. In a new ESPN report, Rick Hendrick, team owner of Hendrick Motorsports, suggests that GM would have seriously considered leaving NASCAR if it wasn't for the move away from the COT to the new Gen 6 racer. According to Hendrick, GM North America boss Mark Reuss spearheaded the charge away from the 2007 COT and toward a racecar with clearer automaker ties - cars like the new Chevrolet SS racer shown above. Learn more about the fight for a closer-to-production look in the ESPN story at the link.
Now, if we could just get more rear-wheel drive V8 coupes into showrooms....

Pit crews are staffed by as many as six qualified personnel. Many of the pit crews stay on duty for 16 hours or more, sometimes as long as 30 hours when needed. The dedication of the JCR/Honda pit staff is legendary. Known as the most reliable and efficient Pit service along the peninsula. Utah Governor Gary Herbert Welcomes Monster Energy SX’s Return to Salt Lake City

Monster Energy Supercross - Photos by Feld Motor Sports - News Release
SALT LAKE CITY (April 26, 2012) – Utah Governor Gary Herbert, along with President & CEO of the Utah Sports Commission Jeff Robbins, welcomed the return of Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, today, hosting a pre-race conference from Rice-Eccles Stadium. Joining Herbert and Robbins on the stage was TwoTwo Motorsports/Bel-Ray Honda’s Chad Reed, Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Justin Brayton and Trey Canard, and Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Broc Tickle.
“We are excited to have Monster Energy Supercross back here in the great state of Utah,” exclaimed Herbert. “This is an event we look forward to hosting in Utah. There is a tremendous amount of support that goes into the event and this is just another example why Utah is the state of sport. Our sport’s segment in Utah is helping our economy grow in a significant way and market Utah as being a great place to live.”
“As you look at the economic footprint, now in our eight year hosting this event, it’s approaching $75 million towards the economic impact and providing almost over $20 million of media promotional value,” said Robbins. “We are simply thrilled to have all the support we do with this event and are excited to have supercross back in Salt Lake City.”

Reed and Canard entered the 2012 Monster Energy Supercross season as two of the title favorites after both competitors were part of the five-rider group that made up the most competitive season of all time one year ago. Reed took an early win at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, and was going bar-to-bar with eventual champion Ryan Villopoto atop the Supercross Class standings before suffering season-ending injuries in an accident at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Despite being forced to step away from competition, Reed has still held a strong presence at the races, primarily by becoming an additional member of the SPEED broadcast team.
“This season was meant to be such an amazing one for us,” said Reed. “The season started out great, and I was in good shape for the championship but disaster struck in Dallas, and I had a crash that got me. It’s unbelievable to think the top-six guys from last season are on the sideline. I’ve shared a lot of great memories here in Salt Lake City, so to not be racing here is a bummer.”
Canard suffered an injury prior to the opening race of the championship, forcing him to miss the first two weeks of action. Upon returning at Los Angeles, Canard was a victim of yet another crash, ultimately removing him from competition for all of the 2012 season.

“It’s really unfortunate what happened earlier in the season,” said Canard. “It’s amazing to be here right now. You try not to think about injuries, but it happened and I need to move forward from here. Bottom line is that I’m thankful to be here and my doctors are optimistic with my return to racing.”
Brayton has been one of the bright spots of the second half of the 2012 Monster Energy Supercross season. He has garnered four podium finishes in the past six races and is arguably one of the hottest riders in the Supercross Class coming into Salt Lake City. With two races remaining, Brayton looks to continue to carry the flag for Team Honda Muscle Milk and potentially break through for his first career win.
“Salt Lake City is one of my favorite stops on the supercross schedule,” said Brayton. “The past couple weeks have been good for me. I’ve gotten great results and it’s exciting to be in shape for locking in second place. I hope I can get it done here.”
Tickle is in the midst of his rookie season in the Supercross Class, just one year after capturing the Western Regional Supercross Lites Class title. While he has experienced some ups and downs, he’s began to hit his stride over the second half of the season and is in the midst of a six-race streak of top-10 finishes.
“It’s always good to back here in Salt Lake City,” said Tickle. “My results this year haven’t been as good as I wanted them to be, but I’m hoping to get on the podium and win races. Last year was fun being in contention for the championship, so I want to get back up top again.”
The first Monster Energy Supercross race inside Rice-Eccles Stadium took place on April 28, 2001, with 42,135 fans on hand to witness Ricky Carmichael capture his 13th win of the 16 race season en route to the championship. Since then, three other riders have stood atop the podium at Salt Lake City, including Reed, Villopoto and Kevin Windham.

Frightening Daytona crash leaves at least 11 fans injured [w/video] [UPDATE]

A truly horrifying crash at Saturday's Daytona race has left at least 11 NASCAR fans injured. According to the Associated Press, large chunks of debris landed in the grandstands after a car flew into the fence during a multi-car crash just before the final lap of the race.
The awful mess started when Regan Smith's car was turned sideways as he was coming into the checkered flag. This caused many other cars to crash, sending Kyle Larson's No. 32 car into the fence that separates the track from the grandstands. The car itself was damaged quite badly, the entire front end torn off and the burning engine wedged in a hole in the fence.
Driver Tony Stewart slid past the wreckage to take the win at the Nationwide Series race, but skipped the usual post-victory celebration. "As much as we want to celebrate right now and as much as this is a big deal to us, I'm more worried about the drivers and the fans that are in the stands right now because that was ... I could see it all in my mirror, and it didn't look good from where I was at," Stewart told a reporter.
A spokesperson from Volusia County told the Associated Press that six people with serious injuries were taken by ambulance to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach, saying that those victims "met the condition of trauma patients." No official word has been given on the condition of other victims, nor has a final injury count been released.
This tragic event will no doubt put a dark cloud over Sunday's Daytona 500 race. Scroll down to see a video of the horrific crash.
UPDATE: A day after the accident, the injury toll has been raised to 33, with two of the victims said to be in critical condition. Check out this Associated Press video report on USA Today and this WOFL Fox 35 report.

Arai introduces aggressive new Defiant helmet

Targeted to riders wanting more style without compromising helmet benefits to get it
(Allentown, PA) For 2013, Arai introduces a new full-face helmet model named the Defiant. It is scheduled to arrive at Arai dealers in late Spring.
If the Defiant name seems a little out of character for Arai, the helmet itself is as well. Much more aggressive looking than its siblings, the Defiant still offers Arai’s enviable array of upmarket features and benefits. In fact, Arai touts the new model to “riders who demand more style on the outside, but who refuse to compromise in other places to get it.”
Among its key features inside are Arai’s patented FCS® (Facial Contour System) cheek pad, a design so advanced the company says it combines unprecedented support and comfort, while further reducing interior noise; 5mm peel-away cheek and temple pads micro-fit the interior to your facial contour; and the fully removable/ washable/replaceable comfort liner now features Arai’s water-repellent Dry-Max™ material on the exposed areas of the cheekpads and neckroll that prevents water absorption in wet conditions and provides a “luxurious” feel. The new IR Neckroll pad has an improved shape to flow more air to the bottom of the helmet at lower speeds for improved rider comfort.

Fermo, Italy MX1 GP - Video Preview

Honda Press Release
The Honda World Motocross team is now heading to Fermo, Italy this weekend for round three of the FIM World MX1 Championship, and we're pleased to offer you a video preview of the event. This includes an insight from Team Manager Lorenzo Resta, as well as riders Evgeny Bobryshev and Rui Goncalves, who give their personal views of the track.
Last year the Fermo race, which is the home round for the Honda World Motocross team, concluded the 2011 Grand Prix series. It wasn't the best outing for the team with Bobryshev struggling in race one and crashing out of the second along with teammate Goncalves finishing eighth overall. However, it did round off a successful season where the riders ended the year in fourth and sixth overall in the championship - Honda's highest result for many years. With the support from the Italian fans, and extra motivation with being the team's home round, both riders will be looking to increase momentum this weekend and come away with some strong results.

Riders can make hands-free mobile phone calls, listen to stereo music or voice instructions of GPS navigations by Bluetooth wirelessly, and have intercom conversations in full duplex with up to three other riders or passengers. The SMH10R is now available at the Sena Technologies website (www.SenaBluetooth.com) or through its many retailers across North America for the price of $219.

Le Mans-raced 1953 Ferrari 340/375 MM headed to auction
Filed under: Motorsports, Classics, Coupe, Performance, Auctions, Europe, Ferrari, Specialty, Racing

Vintage Ferrari models show up on the auction circuit all the time, but few can match this particular '53 340/375 MM Berlinetta Competizione in terms of historical significance. Not only did the machine compete in the 1953 24 Hours of Le Mans, but this particular model managed to finish in second place before being disqualified for taking on extra brake fluid during a stop. More importantly, a total of three Formula One world champions have driven this car in competition at events like the Spa 24 Hours, Pescara 12 Hours and the Circuit of Guadeloupe.
The coolest part for us? Umberto Maglioli managed to set a public road stage record with this machine during the Carrera Panamericana by averaging 138 miles per hour over 223 miles. The effort was good enough to land the team a sixth place finish overall, and the record still stands to this day for any road stage anywhere. The 340/375 MM Berlinetta Competizione is up for auction in restored condition at the

Local Motors Rally Fighter rolls over, refuses to play dead
Filed under: Motorsports, Coupe, Performance, Etc., Off-Road

We already knew that the Local Motors Rally Fighter was one of the most interesting new vehicles of the last decade - it has a compelling backstory (come-from-nowhere company with a crowdsourced design), a fascinating look all its own and off-road chops. But now we know it has something approaching genuine robustness.
How genuine? Check out Turn 2 Production's video of competitor No. 1841 as it runs in this past weekend's Best In The Desert racing series' Parker 425. The 1800-class desert entrant is shown here as its driver takes a small jump but fails to nail the landing, digging the nose in and precipitating an end-over-end flip. The Rally Fighter lands on its wheels, and then without skipping a beat, the team presses on regardless, only momentarily encumbered by a floppy hood.
The team would go on to finish the Parker, AZ race, earning a fourth-in-class place and taking 19th overall.

2013 Moto2 Valencia February Day 3 Test Times: Espargaro Leads, Luthi Crashes
Pol Espargaro has topped the final day of testing for the Moto2 class at Valencia, taking advantage of a day of excellent weather to destroy his existing pole record by over half a second. The Tuenti HP 40 rider ended two tenths ahead of Nico Terol, the local man who always has something extra at Valencia, while Julian Simon took 3rd, some four tenths of a second behind Espargaro. Jordi Torres, Mapfre Aspar teammate to Terol, set an excellent 4th fastest time, while Thomas Luthi was 5th fastest.
Luthi's day ended unhappily, despite his good lap time. The Interwetten Paddock rider collided with Ratthapark Wilairot during the afternoon session, both men falling heavily and being taken to hospital in Valencia for further check ups. Wilairot was being treated for pain in the head, but Luthi suffered a broken arm and collarbone. Luthi is being flow to Bern in Switzerland tonight, to have surgery on the arm. The injury would be very bad news for the Interwetten Paddock team, as the worst case scenario would leave Luthi out with injury for several months.
BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team launched in Munich
The winter break is drawing to an end, the countdown is on to the 2013 eni FIM Superbike World Championship, and the BMW Motorrad GoldBet SBK Team is under starter's orders. With just three weeks to go until the season-opener in Phillip Island, the realigned BMW Motorrad works team was presented to the public in Munich, Germany, on Monday. The international media launch took place in the Double Cone building at BMW Welt near the BMW Group's headquarters.
BMW Motorrad Italia is now responsible for the works team's race and test outings, as well as work on the chassis. The power train and electronics are developed by BMW Motorrad in Munich. Marco Melandri lines up in his second season as a BMW Motorrad works rider alongside his new team-mate Chaz Davies. As General Manager BMW Motorrad WSBK, Andrea Buzzoni is the man with overall responsibility for the Superbike project.
"We are looking to follow on from the success BMW Motorrad achieved last season" explained Andrea Buzzoni. "The various parts in the restructured team became attuned to one another very quickly. Two very experienced teams, which have already shown in the past just how strong and professional they are, have merged into one team. In order to be successful, however, you also need good riders and an outstanding bike - and we have them in the form of Marco, Chaz and the BMW S 1000 RR. Another important 'ingredient' is the speed. The speed, which is one of the most important factors on track, is also essential for the work of the team: to react and act fast is crucial to reach the target and to be competitive."
Works rider Marco Melandri played a major role in the success of BMW Motorrad last year. "Going into the season we certainly didn't expect to pick up six wins and be in contention for the title right down to the final race. This year I am primarily looking to improve my own performances. I don't want to make the same mistakes as I did in 2012, and want to make the podium more consistently" said the Italian, outlining his goals for the 2013 FIM Superbike World Championship.
Britain's Chaz Davies is in his first season as a BMW Motorrad works rider. "This is a big step for me, as it is the first time I have been directly involved in a works project. That means an awful lot to me" said the 2011 Supersport World Champion. "I am very proud, as it is not just any works team, but BMW - a powerful brand. I want to take full advantage of this opportunity. My goal is to continue improving, become more consistent, and end the season in the top five."

Nissan unveils Altima-based V8 Supercars [w/videos]
Filed under: Motorsports, Sedan, Videos, Nissan, Australia, Racing

Good as it is, when we think about the Nissan Altima, the words "V8" or "supercar" are not in our vernacular, but Nissan Motorsports is looking to change all that. After unveiling the race version of its Altima sedan intended for the Australian V8 Supercars series back in October, the four race teams and their cars were revealed yesterday ahead of a preseason test session this weekend.
Two of the Altima racecars will be sponsored by Jack Daniels while the other two will wear Norton (as in Norton Anti-Virus) black-and-yellow livery. The season officially kicks off on March 1, and we'll get to see the V8-powered Altima on US soil from May 17-19 when the V8 Supercars series hits the new Circuit of the Americas in Austin. Scroll down to watch a couple videos and a press release issued for the team introductions.
