Utah Governor Gary Herbert Welcomes Monster Energy SX’s Return to Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY (April 26, 2012) – Utah Governor Gary Herbert, along with President & CEO of the Utah Sports Commission Jeff Robbins, welcomed the return of Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, today, hosting a pre-race conference from Rice-Eccles Stadium. Joining Herbert and Robbins on the stage was TwoTwo Motorsports/Bel-Ray Honda’s Chad Reed, Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Justin Brayton and Trey Canard, and Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Broc Tickle.
“We are excited to have Monster Energy Supercross back here in the great state of Utah,” exclaimed Herbert. “This is an event we look forward to hosting in Utah. There is a tremendous amount of support that goes into the event and this is just another example why Utah is the state of sport. Our sport’s segment in Utah is helping our economy grow in a significant way and market Utah as being a great place to live.”
“As you look at the economic footprint, now in our eight year hosting this event, it’s approaching $75 million towards the economic impact and providing almost over $20 million of media promotional value,” said Robbins. “We are simply thrilled to have all the support we do with this event and are excited to have supercross back in Salt Lake City.”

Reed and Canard entered the 2012 Monster Energy Supercross season as two of the title favorites after both competitors were part of the five-rider group that made up the most competitive season of all time one year ago. Reed took an early win at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, and was going bar-to-bar with eventual champion Ryan Villopoto atop the Supercross Class standings before suffering season-ending injuries in an accident at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Despite being forced to step away from competition, Reed has still held a strong presence at the races, primarily by becoming an additional member of the SPEED broadcast team.
“This season was meant to be such an amazing one for us,” said Reed. “The season started out great, and I was in good shape for the championship but disaster struck in Dallas, and I had a crash that got me. It’s unbelievable to think the top-six guys from last season are on the sideline. I’ve shared a lot of great memories here in Salt Lake City, so to not be racing here is a bummer.”
Canard suffered an injury prior to the opening race of the championship, forcing him to miss the first two weeks of action. Upon returning at Los Angeles, Canard was a victim of yet another crash, ultimately removing him from competition for all of the 2012 season.

“It’s really unfortunate what happened earlier in the season,” said Canard. “It’s amazing to be here right now. You try not to think about injuries, but it happened and I need to move forward from here. Bottom line is that I’m thankful to be here and my doctors are optimistic with my return to racing.”
Brayton has been one of the bright spots of the second half of the 2012 Monster Energy Supercross season. He has garnered four podium finishes in the past six races and is arguably one of the hottest riders in the Supercross Class coming into Salt Lake City. With two races remaining, Brayton looks to continue to carry the flag for Team Honda Muscle Milk and potentially break through for his first career win.
“Salt Lake City is one of my favorite stops on the supercross schedule,” said Brayton. “The past couple weeks have been good for me. I’ve gotten great results and it’s exciting to be in shape for locking in second place. I hope I can get it done here.”
Tickle is in the midst of his rookie season in the Supercross Class, just one year after capturing the Western Regional Supercross Lites Class title. While he has experienced some ups and downs, he’s began to hit his stride over the second half of the season and is in the midst of a six-race streak of top-10 finishes.
“It’s always good to back here in Salt Lake City,” said Tickle. “My results this year haven’t been as good as I wanted them to be, but I’m hoping to get on the podium and win races. Last year was fun being in contention for the championship, so I want to get back up top again.”
The first Monster Energy Supercross race inside Rice-Eccles Stadium took place on April 28, 2001, with 42,135 fans on hand to witness Ricky Carmichael capture his 13th win of the 16 race season en route to the championship. Since then, three other riders have stood atop the podium at Salt Lake City, including Reed, Villopoto and Kevin Windham.

Watch Graham Hill describe a classic lap of Monaco
Filed under: Motorsports, Videos, Celebrities

Normally when a Formula 1 driver takes us on a lap of a circuit, it's done with the visual aid of a car actually traveling the track - the driver narrates what we see on screen. In the good old days before every car sported cameras, however, it wasn't like that.
Graham Hill, double World Championship winner and father of Damon Hill, was asked to describe a lap of Monaco in 1968. He won the race five times in his tragically shortened career, and the so-called King of Monaco explained a lap the good old-fashioned way: he told a story and took time to focus on the good bits. Watch him recount it in the video below.

With sportbikes, finding a way to carry items comfortably and safely can be a hit-or-miss affair. Tankbags can be cumbersome and awkward if they’re too big, and soft luggage can be difficult to fit if it hangs down too close to your exhaust. Tailbags can be dangerous if not secured properly (we’ve seen firsthand what happens when one of the fastening hooks comes off and the bag becomes wedged into the rear tire), and they’re not stable if packed with goods.

Wild Wally Palmer is back on the Bike and Getting Ready for EnduroCross

Palmer shows off video of his first time back on the bike after knee surgery - GEICO AMA EnduroCross News Release
Irvine, CA (April 25, 2012) – If you have ever been to a GEICO AMA EnduroCross event or watched one on TV, you have probably noticed Wild Wally Palmer. He is a madman on the track that always gives it 100% and typically catches more air than anybody. And in spite of some ugly crashes that led to a destroyed knee in 2011, he made it to every event and continued to attract more fans along the way. He literally used duct tape to hold his knee together at the Everett Washington event and still qualified for the main event on his two wheel drive Christini.

After the Vegas finals in November, Palmer finally got a much needed knee surgery and is just now back on a Trials bike to start getting ready for the Las Vegas opening round coming up inside the Orleans Arena on Friday, May 4th. He sent over a link to this video showing some POV action at his EnduroCross practice track along with this note; “I’m going to start riding a big bike on Thursday for the first time since the last EnduroCross. My leg is feeling good. Here is the track I made that is pretty close to the Vegas track map. I even made the over and under bridge. Check it out!” Here is the link: http://youtu.be/y-kua3pgXyg

MotoGP Phillip Island qualifying report—Stoner on pole

Casey Stoner easily takes pole position during qualifying for Phillip Island MotoGP, with Jorge Lorenzo second and Dani Pedrosa third; Valentino Rossi eighth, Nicky Hayden 10th, Colin Edwards 16th
PHILLIP ISLAND, AUSTRALIA, OCT 27 – The Australian Grand Prix will be historic, regardless of the result. Whether favored son Casey Stoner (Repsol Honda) wins the race for a record sixth time or whether Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo clinches his second MotoGP World Championship, the race won’t soon be forgotten.
The race on Phillip Island has been marked on the calendar ever since Stoner announced earlier this MotoGP season that it would be his last. There were races many wanted to see, but none had the appeal of Phillip Island. Stoner and the track have a connection like few others. Before Stoner won five in a row Valentino Rossi had run off five in a row. In between the two Marco Melandri won the race for his one and only time. If he wins for a sixth time, it will be yet another marker Stoner can put between himself and Rossi.
When Stoner was forced to undergo surgery following his MotoGP qualifying crash in the Red Bull Indy GP, he penciled the Japanese Grand Prix at Motegi as the race for his return, but mostly to get race fit for Phillip Island. Neither Motegi nor Sepang were satisfying. And despite the passing of time, his surgically repaired right ankle has gotten worse. But Philip Island is mostly lefts—dirt trackers, and Stoner is a former dirt tracker, love it—with only two rights.
Stoner managed to fall in one of the rights about 20 minutes into the MotoGP qualifying session. Ironically it was in the Honda hairpin right. An engine braking glitch was the culprit, Stoner would later say. The crash came as he was entering the corner on an out lap. The bike somersaulted down the track with Stoner making sure to avoid it. The bike was heavily damaged, Stoner walked away.

2012 Phillip Island Moto3 FP1 Result: Cortese Sets Early Pace
Sandro Cortese got his first session of free practice as Moto3 World Champion off to a strong start, ending a dry but windy practice on Friday morning on top of the timesheets. The German had a comfortable lead over his Red Bull KTM teammate, Cortese faster than Danny Kent by over four tenths of a second. Mapfre Aspar's Jonas Folger took 3rd, finishing ahead of Maverick Viñales, the FTR Honda rider over 1.1 seconds behind Cortese in 4th. The return of the prodigal Viñales had been made possibe after the young Spaniard had issued a humbling retraction and apology for his withdrawal at Sepang, first in a press release, and later in person in a press conference at Phillip Island on Friday morning.

Press Release: Vinales Issues Formal Apology Over Sepang Withdrawal
Maverick Viñales today issued a formal apology in the form of a press release. The translated version, taken from the official MotoGP.com website, is show below:
Firstly I would like to publicly give my sincerely apologies to those that were harmed or affected by my behaviour in Sepang. I'm here to come forward, ask for forgiveness and take responsibility for my mistakes. I have returned to continue fighting with my Blusens Avintia team for the runner-up spot in the championship. There are many people who deserve it. Sponsors, technicians and the fans.
My hasty departure from the Malaysian GP was certainly not good. But with the tension generated by my position in the team, I fell into a state of anger and frustration that was certainly not an ideal state of mind to ride a bike in – especially ride it at the limit.
