Honda HR412E 1.6-liter touring car race engine

Technical details are still scant, but we do know a tiny bit more about Honda and its plans for a World Touring Car Championship entrant based on the Euro-spec 2012 Civic. The automaker has unveiled its HR412E, a 1.6-liter, turbocharged and direct injected gas engine, and let us know its plans for getting the engine and car into some races: Tiago Monteiro will race one example in the final three rounds of the season, beginning with Suzuka, and multiple touring car champion Gabriele Tarquini will join him for races in the second car as of 2013. Tarquini is doing development work on the car this year.

The car itself is currently in Milan, Italy being tested and prepped by JAS Motorsport, a collaboration we've already had a taste of in the dirt with their Honda Jazz rally car. Honda has also partnered with Mugen on its WTCC project. It will be three months before we see the Civic WTCC going for the checkered flag, the Suzuka race running October 19-21. Have a read of the presser below for a few more details on the engine and the drivers.

Guintoli officially joins Pata Ducati

guintoli_pataPata Racing Ducati has officially announced that Sylvain Guintoli will form part of the team from the next round of the Superbike World Championship at Silverstone onwards, where he will team up with Lorenzo Zanetti. The Frenchman currently lies eighth overall in the production-based championship this year, with one win to his name at Assen, six podiums and one pole position. He has started from the front row six times, has set three fastest laps and has accumulated a total of 523 points so far. Pata Racing has now secured the services of one of the top riders in the championship.

"I am delighted with this new collaboration, which enables me to look serenely to the future" declared Guintoli. "I would like to thank Team Pata for the interest they have shown in me, as well as Ducati, the sponsors and all those who made this agreement possible. My desire to race and to do so in the best possible conditions has never been lacking and I can't wait to show this starting with the next round of the season on August 5th."

Team Manager Andrea Prando added: "The team has now been strengthened with the arrival of an expert and successful rider like Sylvain Guintoli. This new collaboration has come about thanks to the efforts of my main sponsor who strongly believe in the work and the commitment of the entire team to take part in the championship at the highest level. The arrival of a rider of the calibre of Sylvain will also help Lorenzo Zanetti, who as always enjoys our utmost support."

Pirelli notes from Brno

Pirelli

Giorgio Barbier (Racing Director Pirelli Moto) analyzes the ninth round of the year, held at the Automotodrom Brno circuit in the Czech Republic.

"The two World Superbike Championship races on the Brno circuit confirmed that the selection of solutions we decided to bring to this round was definitely the right one, especially considering the fact that the weather conditions turned out to be quite unpredictable throughout the entire weekend. Specifically, Sunday was marked by brief showers and rather low temperatures for this time of year. In fact, Race 1 was held with an asphalt temperature of 22C and a few sections of the track which were completely wet, while for Race 2 there was a temperature of 19 but completely dry asphalt. Both of the SC0 compound solutions for the rear were popular with the riders, particularly the brand new R874 in an oversize 200 inches profile which was chosen by about 70% of the riders. My compliments to Marco Melandri and the entire BMW Motorrad Motorsport team for the fine work they have done these past few days, moving into the manufacturer leadership. I would also like to compliment Kawasaki for their excellent placements both in Superbike and in the Supersport and Superstock 1000 classes. This year the Championship has once again proven to be very exciting: at five rounds from the end there are four riders and four teams who are very much in the running for the world title."

Watch this Audi S1 Group B racer tear up the Kyustendil Hillclimb

Filed under: , , , , , ,

Bulgarian tuner Prospeed has built a replica of Audi's fabled S1 World Rally Championship mauler out of a garden-variety Audi Coupe, and it's a convincing-looking beast. Helping in its bid for authenticity is genuine Group B horsepower: 800 ponies, to be exact. It won the Bulgarian Hillclimb Championship last year, and it recently ran up an incline at the Kyustendil Hillclimb, part of this year's championship series.

The list of modifications made to the donor car are intense, and so is the sound of the final product, singing like a crazed goldfinch as driver Nikolay Zlatkov races to the top of the hill. You can have a watch - and a listen - in the video below.

Car and Driver dissects the physics of monster trucks

Filed under: , , ,

Ram-bodied monster truck crushing Mazda

It doesn't really matter what age you are, we can all agree that monster trucks are awesome. How can you argue with a 20-foot tall tube-frame harbinger of destruction, mowing down row after row derelict cars and trucks? Every "SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY!," somewhere in America, a dirt-filled arena is hosting this spectacle of high-horsepower automotive carnage.

For the more mathematically inclined, monster trucks are a also feat of engineering, sending over 10,000 pounds hurtling through the air at 30+ mph. To this end, Car and Driver has put together a little breakdown of the physics behind these beasts. For instance, a monster truck needs 1,500 horsepower, developed from a supercharged, alcohol-fueled V8 to rocket into the air at a 45-degree angle at 40 miles per hour. The likes of Bigfoot and Gravedigger reach a peak altitude of 32.5 feet, moving through the air at 32 miles per hour.

When a monster truck makes its descent, things get interesting. A direct landing can come down with the force of 25,500 pounds. That's enough to turn a Crown Victoria or Oldsmobile 88 into a doormat.

Some other fun facts: two-thirds or roughly 7,000 pounds of a monster truck is unsprung weight. In the main, that means the wheels, axles and rubber. The tires themselves are about 66 inches tall.

C/D explains that with the four-wheel steering systems on these behemoths, these trucks can maintain spins in a nearly inverted turning radius. As their speed rises, the center of gravity pushes to the outer wheels, and the truck can topple over.

Hold on to your corn dogs.

Guest Story: Trackday at Laguna Seca with Moto2 World Champion and MotoGP rider, Stefan Bradl

2012 is Stefan Bradl's rookie season in MotoGP, and as such, he faces many challenges. There's the difficulties of dealing with the power of a MotoGP bike, the complications of handling the sophisticated electronics used in the class, and there's the Bridgestone tires to master. Another problem that is sometimes overlooked for MotoGP rookies is having to learn a new and demanding circuit, the complex layout of the Laguna Seca track. As the junior classes (now Moto2 and Moto3, previously 125cc and 250cc) do not visit Laguna Seca due to space and noise constraints, rookies face the double challenge of learning the circuit and finding a way to manhandle a MotoGP bike around it. The the track is featured on many MotoGP computer games, the elevation changes and camber of the track make it much harder to learn.

To alleviate some of the problems of learning the circuit, Stefan Bradl decided to use a public trackday to learn his way around. Adam Silver, keen racing fan and trackday enthusiast, learned that Bradl would be riding at Laguna, and went along to join the fun. Below is his account of the day Stefan Bradl followed him around Laguna.

Nrburgring goes bust, EU not planning to help

Filed under: , , ,

The Nürburgring is officially broke. According to various German sources, the only chance the owners of the 'Ring have to fend off bankruptcy is if the track gets 13 million euros of new life injected into it. Problem is, state officials have said it's not going to happen.

In other words, the Nürburgring will go into administration and its future will at least in part be decided in court. Also up for debate will be the legality of 524 million euros worth of funding that the state has already pumped into the track, an amusement park with hotels and a shopping mall that make up the local attraction.

Reports indicate that the rest of 2012 will proceed as planned at the 'Ring. After that, it's anybody's guess what will happen to the famous German racetrack.

Vettel receives time penalty, demoted to fifth

Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel has been handed a 20-second time penalty by the stewards in Germany for his pass on McLaren's Jenson Button during the closing stages of Sunday's race. Vettel had finished the Hockenheim event in second, but the addition of the penalty leaves him fifth in the results.

The stewards decided the German gained an advantage after leaving the track at the exit of the hairpin as he attempted to overtake Button on Lap 66, in breach of article 20.2 of the sporting regulations. They elected to give him a drive-through penalty which, when imposed after the race, means 20 seconds is added to the penalised driver's finishing time.

Automotodrom Brno - statistics

751_r09_race2_startWorldSBK.com provides a quick round-up of the facts and figures from the ninth eni FIM Superbike World Championship round at the Brno circuit in the Czech Republic.

RACES

? First career double for Marco Melandri, who joins the elite of 36 riders able to win both races in a weekend: the record men in this area are Troy Bayliss and Carl Fogarty with sixteen each;
? This was also the first BMW double, the eighth constructor to reach this goal. At the top is Ducati, with 112 doubles;
? Marco Melandri is becoming an icon for the German manufacturer: he has given them, in order, their best result, second in Phillip Island this year, then their first win in Donington and now their first double;
? Italian riders now have won seven consecutive races: four by Melandri and three by Biaggi. The record for Italy had already been beaten in Aragon, while the absolute record is still quite far away: in 2003 from Valencia to Silverstone, there were twelve straight British wins, eleven by Neil Hodgson and one by James Toseland;
? In race one Tom Sykes and Loris Baz were able to take two Kawasakis to the podium for the first time since the 2001 Sugo round, when Hitoyasu Izutsu and Tamaki Serizawa were second and third in race two. The Sugo rounds however favoured local wild cards at the time, so to find two Kawasakis on the podium in a race run outside Japan, we have to go back to the 1998 Laguna Seca round, race one, when Akira Yanagawa and Doug Chandler were second and third;
? Loris Baz became the second youngest rider in history to climb on the podium at the age of 19 years, 5 months and 21 days. The record was set by Japan's Yuichi Takeda, in Sugo, 1996: he won at 18 years, 8 months and 27 days;
? Tenth career podium for Tom Sykes in race two;
? A curious record for Eugene Laverty: he has always finished his four races in Brno in fifth place;
? For the first time in his Superbike career, Max Biaggi missed out on the podium in Brno in both races and Jonathan Rea wasn't able to finish in the top-10;

QUALIFYING

? Tom Sykes scored his ninth career pole, joining Raymond Roche at the ninth all-time spot;
? Seventh season pole for Kawasaki, a record for the Japanese manufacturer: the absolute record of thirteen poles was set by Ducati twenty years ago (1992), while in recent times Yamaha were able to record eleven in 2009, all by Ben Spies;
? Tom Sykes, starting from the next round, will be able to reach the third absolute value for season poles: eight, scored by Bayliss in 2008. The absolute record is the aforementioned one by Spies;
? 30th front row start for Carlos Checa, only one less than Max Biaggi in the all-time list. At the top Troy Corser with 99. Milestone also for Eugene Laverty, at his tenth front row start;
? For the third time in the last four races, Davide Giugliano scored his best qualifying result, a fourth, the same spot he occupied in Miller and Misano;
? Max Biaggi's performances in Brno this year were below par also in qualifying: fourteenth, eleven places behind his team-mate Laverty, Up to now he had always qualified on the front row in Brno and was never beaten by a team-mate;

MotoGP Director Of Technology Corrado Cecchinelli Explains The Spec ECU Proposal

Costs in MotoGP have exploded since the introduction of four-stroke engines, with the rise turning almost exponential once the relatively simple 990s were dropped to make way for the 800cc MotoGP machines. Since the beginning of the financial crisis, MotoGP has been looking for ways to cut costs, with much of the effort taking place through changes to the technical regulations. The first step was a return to 1000cc engines, with a bore limit of 81mm to keep revs down. The following steps will be the imposition of a strict rev limit - most probably 15,000 RPM - and the introduction of controls on electronics through the adoption of a spec ECU.

There has been much debate about the proposed rule changes, and especially about the introduction of a single ECU. Electronics have come to play a central role in MotoGP, and have been a massive driver of costs in the sport, with the manufacturers focusing much of their development on developing ever-more sophisticated electronics strategies for maximizing performance from the 21 liters of fuel permitted for the MotoGP bikes. The fans and followers are divided: many would welcome a strict limit on the electronics used on the bikes, claiming that the amount of electronic intervention is ruining the racing and taking control out of the hands of the riders and placing it with the software engineers who write the code for the ECUs. Others deride that argument, saying that imposing a spec ECU is yet another step in the dumbing down of MotoGP, and another move away from the unfettered pursuit of advantage in every area, including technology, that underlies the spirit of Grand Prix racing.

Would a spec ECU lead to the unacceptable dumbing down of racing? Would it really help to control costs? To help clarify the debate, MotoMatters.com spoke to MotoGP's Director of Technology Corrado Cecchinelli, the man who was brought in by Dorna at the beginning of last year to help lay out a stable plan for the series in the future. Cecchinelli explained to us the thinking behind the adoption of a standard ECU, and went into detail about the capabilities which such a component may have. Throughout the interview, Cecchinelli was at pains to point out that a final decision had not yet been made on the adoption of a spec ECU, and that the introduction of a rev limit and spec ECU were the final steps in establishing a stable set of rules which could be used unchanged for several years.

MotoMatters: We've heard so much about the introduction of a spec ECU in MotoGP, that we came to you to clear the issue up. What exactly are the plans for the ECU?

Formula Cross seeks to turn ATVs into mini racers

Filed under: , , ,

Although the vehicle sliding through the image above looks something like a cartoonified World Rally Championship Ford Focus, it is actually an ATV - the Yamaha YZF 450 Raptor, at right - turned into a miniature rally car. The transformation comes courtesy of Formula Cross, a company that wants to create an entry series into motorsports or weekend-warrioring that's more open, and kinder on the body, than karting. From what we can tell, the brains behind the machine is none other than RMR.

The resulting YFC 450 has equipment like a tubular chassis and "build it" roll cage, a racing steering wheel, and 12 inches of wheel travel with an adjustable sway bar and a wider track. The Formula Cross site announces its creation is coming this fall, so there's not a lot of information to really figure out exactly how they've completed the metamorphosis or how much it will cost. The whole thing is said to weigh 495 pounds wet; there's an asterisk after that, though, and back to that lack of info, we have no idea what the numerous asterisks on the equipment and specs lists represent.

We can say without any asterisks that we're intrigued. There's a video below to watch the Formula Cross in dirty action.

2012 Mugello Moto3 Race Report: Viales' Winning Strategy Was His Own Sheer Speed

After Sandro Cortese had won the Moto3 race in Germany the week before, it was logical to expect more of the same from the championship leader at the ultra fast racetrack of Mugello. Even more so if you believe the not yet fully proven myth of KTM's supersonic engines, as they have appeared to be at some tracks this in this first season of Moto3.

After Viñales' wet nightmare at the Sachsenring just a few days ago - unable to gain even a single point in the race, something very difficult to understand for such a road racing talent as Viñales has already demonstrated he is-, the Spaniard on the FTR Honda looked to be ready to fight for victory again at a dry Mugello.

Viñales was the fastest rider on the track during the free practice sessions, gradually getting closer to Bradley Smith's best pole position in 2009 with the Aprilia 125 two stroke. The British rider's fastest lap time back in 2009 -1'58.134- was finally beaten by Viñales' 1'57.980 during qualifying.
