Leonov attempts to recover for Aragon

After becoming the first-ever Russian rider to get onto the podium in a world championship race, at Assen, Vladimir Leonov then had a bad accident at Donington Park in UK during the fifth round of the 2012 FIM Supersport World Championship. In the crash the talented Russian rider suffered a small tibia fracture. After returning to Moscow the Yakhnich Motorsport racer underwent complicated surgery and has recently started a rehabilitation program. WorldSBK.com recently spoke to Leonov to see how his recovery was progressing.
"The Donington events were very disappointing and a bit painful for us," declared Leonov. "I ran well during free practice, looking for the best set-up and for the best pace, and... then suddenly I had this crash - absolutely unexpected and unaccountable. In Moscow they inserted a pair of screws into me during the surgery, and after that I had to take regular massages - to get rid of swelling and bruising. Starting from the second week the recovery program had begun: they used Magnetic therapy and added the decompression chamber procedures. The first x-ray examination showed that I still couldn't ride a bike, so I went on doing my exercises, additionally starting fitness training to keep myself in shape.
"My great desire is to be back in the championship at Aragon, but the decision could be done only after the additional x-ray examination. As for now, I have missed one of our training stages in the Italian Championship, that was held on June 22-24 at Mugello. I have been to Aragon only once, training with the team, but this track had impressed me greatly and I'd like to race there very much".

Fermo, Italy MX1 GP - Video Preview

Honda Press Release
The Honda World Motocross team is now heading to Fermo, Italy this weekend for round three of the FIM World MX1 Championship, and we're pleased to offer you a video preview of the event. This includes an insight from Team Manager Lorenzo Resta, as well as riders Evgeny Bobryshev and Rui Goncalves, who give their personal views of the track.
Last year the Fermo race, which is the home round for the Honda World Motocross team, concluded the 2011 Grand Prix series. It wasn't the best outing for the team with Bobryshev struggling in race one and crashing out of the second along with teammate Goncalves finishing eighth overall. However, it did round off a successful season where the riders ended the year in fourth and sixth overall in the championship - Honda's highest result for many years. With the support from the Italian fans, and extra motivation with being the team's home round, both riders will be looking to increase momentum this weekend and come away with some strong results.

2012 Assen MotoGP FP1 Result: Lorenzo Takes Top In Final Minutes
Jorge Lorenzo ended the first session of free practice for the MotoGP class at Assen on top of the timesheets, squeaking ahead of Casey Stoner as the session ended. Stoner had dominated for much of the session, but the Yamahas closed the gap as FP1 drew to a close. In the end, Lorenzo took a slim lead over the Australian. Stoner's Repsol Honda teammate Dani Pedrosa also slipped through ahead of Stoner to take 2nd, leaving the Australian in 3rd.
Ben Spies posted a respectable 4th fastest time, at the track where he secured his first and so far only victory in MotoGP. Nicky Hayden put the factory Ducati in 5th, three quarters of a second behind Lorenzo, and just ahead of Alvaro Bautista on the San Carlo Gresini Honda. Hector Barbera took 7th on the Pramac Ducati, following Andrea Dovizioso around to end ahead of the Italian, forcing Dovizioso down into 8th, just ahead of Monster Tech 3 Yamaha teammate Cal Crutchlow. Valentino Rossi rounds out the top 10, just under a second slower than Lorenzo.

FIM Superstock 1000 Cup battle heats up
Always considered a class for youngsters eager to make their name on the world scene, the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup will be reaching its halfway point - five rounds out of 10 - at MotorLand Aragon in Spain next week. The category is always an ideal arena for under-26 year olds to show their talent, and it is not by chance that Superstock 1000 in recent years has thrown up a number of riders who are now firmly established on the Superbike World Championship scene. These include riders of the calibre of Ayrton Badovini (2010 champion for BMW Motorrad Italia) and Davide Giugliano (last year's winner for Ducati Althea), as well as Maxime Berger, Niccol Canepa, Lorenzo Zanetti and, last but not least, Loris Baz, who has become a factory Kawasaki Superbike rider.
Hoping to follow in their footsteps, the current protagonists of the FIM Cup have given life to four nail-biting races, and the most likely candidate for overall victory is Sylvain Barrier (BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet). In winning three of the four rounds held so far (Imola, Assen, Misano), the young Frenchman more than made up for his ?no-score' at Monza (due to an injury to his left shoulder), but his momentary stop has also given some hope to his key rivals.
The first name on this list is Lorenzo Savadori, the former European and Italian 125 GP champion, who is just 11 points away from the top on his Barni Racing Team Italia-prepared Ducati 1199 Panigale. Winner at Monza, and the first man to take the new Ducati sportbike to victory, the Italian has now been caught by his team-mate Eddi La Marra, poleman at Imola on his debut with Ducati. La Marra is third on 61 points and has missed out on the podium only once, at Misano Adriatico. The promising young German Markus Reiterberger has still to step on the podium and is fourth overall with an alpha Racing BMW, but he is rapidly being hauled in by two men who have tasted the champagne: Lorenzo Baroni (runner-up at Misano with BMW Motorrad Italia GoldBet, but unlucky in the first three rounds) and the surprising Swede Christoffer Bergman, who finished third at Monza with a Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R of the BWG Racing team.
As the second half of the season approaches, the jury is still out on Australian Bryan Staring, capable of scoring an exceptional 10th place in Superbike race 1 at Phillip Island as replacement for the injured Leandro Mercado (another product of the Superstock 1000 ?nursery') and Fabio Massei (Honda EAB Ten Kate Junior Team). Meanwhile the former European Superstock 600 champion Jeremy Guarnoni, has since Misano returned to MRS Racing Kawasaki as replacement for Loris Baz, who has already shown considerable prowess in Superbike; further confirmation that the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup is increasingly becoming a training-ground for future World Superbike champions.

Utah Governor Gary Herbert Welcomes Monster Energy SX’s Return to Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY (April 26, 2012) – Utah Governor Gary Herbert, along with President & CEO of the Utah Sports Commission Jeff Robbins, welcomed the return of Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, today, hosting a pre-race conference from Rice-Eccles Stadium. Joining Herbert and Robbins on the stage was TwoTwo Motorsports/Bel-Ray Honda’s Chad Reed, Team Honda Muscle Milk’s Justin Brayton and Trey Canard, and Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Broc Tickle.
“We are excited to have Monster Energy Supercross back here in the great state of Utah,” exclaimed Herbert. “This is an event we look forward to hosting in Utah. There is a tremendous amount of support that goes into the event and this is just another example why Utah is the state of sport. Our sport’s segment in Utah is helping our economy grow in a significant way and market Utah as being a great place to live.”
“As you look at the economic footprint, now in our eight year hosting this event, it’s approaching $75 million towards the economic impact and providing almost over $20 million of media promotional value,” said Robbins. “We are simply thrilled to have all the support we do with this event and are excited to have supercross back in Salt Lake City.”

Reed and Canard entered the 2012 Monster Energy Supercross season as two of the title favorites after both competitors were part of the five-rider group that made up the most competitive season of all time one year ago. Reed took an early win at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, and was going bar-to-bar with eventual champion Ryan Villopoto atop the Supercross Class standings before suffering season-ending injuries in an accident at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Despite being forced to step away from competition, Reed has still held a strong presence at the races, primarily by becoming an additional member of the SPEED broadcast team.
“This season was meant to be such an amazing one for us,” said Reed. “The season started out great, and I was in good shape for the championship but disaster struck in Dallas, and I had a crash that got me. It’s unbelievable to think the top-six guys from last season are on the sideline. I’ve shared a lot of great memories here in Salt Lake City, so to not be racing here is a bummer.”
Canard suffered an injury prior to the opening race of the championship, forcing him to miss the first two weeks of action. Upon returning at Los Angeles, Canard was a victim of yet another crash, ultimately removing him from competition for all of the 2012 season.

“It’s really unfortunate what happened earlier in the season,” said Canard. “It’s amazing to be here right now. You try not to think about injuries, but it happened and I need to move forward from here. Bottom line is that I’m thankful to be here and my doctors are optimistic with my return to racing.”
Brayton has been one of the bright spots of the second half of the 2012 Monster Energy Supercross season. He has garnered four podium finishes in the past six races and is arguably one of the hottest riders in the Supercross Class coming into Salt Lake City. With two races remaining, Brayton looks to continue to carry the flag for Team Honda Muscle Milk and potentially break through for his first career win.
“Salt Lake City is one of my favorite stops on the supercross schedule,” said Brayton. “The past couple weeks have been good for me. I’ve gotten great results and it’s exciting to be in shape for locking in second place. I hope I can get it done here.”
Tickle is in the midst of his rookie season in the Supercross Class, just one year after capturing the Western Regional Supercross Lites Class title. While he has experienced some ups and downs, he’s began to hit his stride over the second half of the season and is in the midst of a six-race streak of top-10 finishes.
“It’s always good to back here in Salt Lake City,” said Tickle. “My results this year haven’t been as good as I wanted them to be, but I’m hoping to get on the podium and win races. Last year was fun being in contention for the championship, so I want to get back up top again.”
The first Monster Energy Supercross race inside Rice-Eccles Stadium took place on April 28, 2001, with 42,135 fans on hand to witness Ricky Carmichael capture his 13th win of the 16 race season en route to the championship. Since then, three other riders have stood atop the podium at Salt Lake City, including Reed, Villopoto and Kevin Windham.
