PRODUCT UPGRADE: APRILIA RS4 50 2 STROKES
The "old glory" Aprilia 2 storkes 50cc engine is still in production, but a new model has been introduced with a newer engine: the RS4 50cc. Style of the bike has changed, but the overall design of the Arrow exhaust is very close to a standard 2 strokes engine, with a muffler providing the volume to handle pressure waves and a silencer damping the noise. The result is a low-mount silencer, fitted close to the RH footpeg, made in titanium. Muffler is in transparent-coated steel, and it is designed to fit under OE bodywork and to have correct volume and profile to take out the best performance from the engine. Power output (measured on wheel) is around 8.5hp, compared to the 7hp with the OE system.

World Champion not too happy with the new “more friendly” spec Bridgestone tires

SEPANG, MALAYSIA, JAN 30 – Repsol Honda’s Casey Stoner doesn’t think the new, user-friendly control Bridgestone tires are causing chatter, he knows it.

“When you go from the old tires with no chatter to the new tires and your fillings are falling out, it’s definitely the new tires,” Stoner said at the Repsol Honda team launch on the eve of the start of the 2012 testing season in Sepang, Malaysia.

Stoner tested the Honda RC213V three times last year, first in Jerez, then Brno, and finally in Valencia at the end of the year. The chattering became an issue when the larger displacement Honda was fitted with the 2012 Bridgestones, tires that warm up faster at the expense of durability. Bridgestone made changes to the control tires after complaints from riders that they were sketchy in the opening laps, and after almost every rider suffered some kind of cold tire crash.

Neither Stoner nor his team can pinpoint the cause of the chatter, “but it definitely changed the bike completely. From a bike that we were pretty happy with and didn’t have any chattering issues to all of a sudden it just being ridiculous, then yeah, we pinpointed it. But unfortunately with tire competition we’d be able to get this fixed, but now it’s the single tire rule.”

2012 Honda RC213V Debuts in Malaysia

While Ducati Corse is busy playing hide-the-Desmosedici at Sepang, HRC is all business in Malaysia this week, and has debuted its 2012 Honda RC213V MotoGP-contender. Honda isn’t saying too much about the RC213V, simply stating that the race bike is all new, but is also a continuation of the company’s design with the 800cc Honda RC212V. Testing the Honda RC213V over the course of last season, reigning-World Champion Casey rode the new 1,000cc machine three ...

Petrov lines up as Pirelli test driver... but what will he drive?

Vitaly Petrov at Lotus Renault GP

When the music stops, there are always a few Formula One drivers left without seats. That's not because the field is getting smaller, it's because there are always more drivers looking for rides than there are rides to go around. And that's certainly the case this season. With only one race seat still yet to be confirmed at the perennial backmarker Hispania Racing Team (HRT), several drivers were dumped by the teams they drove for last season.

That includes Rubens Barrichello (axed by Williams in favor of Bruno Senna), Jaime Alguersuari and Sebastien Buemi (both canned by Toro Rosso), Tonio Liuzzi (from HRT), Adrian Sutil (from Force India) and Vitaly Petrov (dismissed by Lotus-Renault in favor of Kimi Raikkonen).

So where will they all end up? Barrichello and Sutil are left scratching their heads, while Alguersuari and Buemi are lining up roles as official test drivers for major teams. But Petrov is reportedly looking at another avenue that is neither with a current team nor altogether outside of F1.

An official announcement has not been made, but all signs point towards Petrov serving as official test driver for Pirelli. The Italian rubber company needs an F1 driver with recent experience and proven talent to test the tires it furnishes for the entire grid at each grand prix, and that driver looks to be Petrov.

The question is, what will he be driving as Pirelli's test pilot? Last year, the company used the 2009 Toyota TF109, but that's now three years old - a relic by F1 standards. Picking up one of last year's cars from a team still competing in the series could constitute an unfair advantage, particularly given the constrictions on testing these days, so Pirelli is reportedly working with all the teams to try and find a consensus solution, but if none is found, it may have to cut a deal with one of the teams in order to continue its development work on next year's tire compounds.

Watch this Nissan 240SX roll during a drifting exhibition

Probably the less said about this video, the better. According to the video uploader, the event takes place during the "Still Ballin' Car Club Nite Out" (yes, really), but we aren't sure if it's a proper race or just for show. Heck, we can't even figure out where the event took place.

At any rate, a pair of drivers are seriously going at it when what looks to be a 240SX pulling up the rear clips a corner and does some unintended tumbling. Thankfully, the Nissan driver was apparently alright. We'll leave it at that - follow the jump to see what happens. Beware, there's some explicit language in the video, including the music.

Circuit of the Americas opens waitlist for United States Grand Prix tickets

Circuit of the Americas grandstand illustration

Just under 300 days separate us from the return of the United States Grand Prix. At least that's the idea, now that construction has resumed on the troubled Circuit of the Americas on the outskirts of Austin, Texas. But an encouraging sign is that race organizers have started gearing up to sell tickets.

While seats haven't exactly been put up for sale just yet, organizers are now populating a wait list for premium seats. Those constitute seats with an advantageous view of the action, covered from the Texas sun, with priority parking and concessions.

No matter how many seats you'll want to buy, you can get your name down on that list with a $100 deposit. If General Admission is more your pace, however, those won't begin selling until the summer.

THR Motorsports News Release

CORONA, CA, JAN. 24
THR Motorsports ace David Pearson kicked off the AMA Racing/Kenda National Hare & Hound Championship Series with a strong runner-up finish to defending series champ Kurt Caselli after a fast, dusty 45th Winter Classic hosted by the Desert Motorcycle Club in Lucerne Valley, California.

“Getting second overall at the first round behind Caselli pretty consistent and you’ve got to be consistent all year to have a chance at winning the championship,” Pearson pointed out.

Pearson was second off the start behind Caselli, but Destry Abbott snuck past Pearson in the early going, the five-time series champ putting in an inspired ride until brake issues popped up.

“I came into the pits I was right behind ; Caselli was probably 25 seconds ahead of him or whatever,” Pearson explained. “I went out on the second and put my head down and caught up and passed Destry. He didn’t have any brakes; I’m not sure when he lost them. I took a different trail than him and was able to pass him.

“From there, I just rode solid.”

Pearson praised the performance of his THR Motorsports/Monster Energy/Precision Concepts KX450F prepared by Bob Bell, despite having very little time to test after its arrival. THR Motorsports is also backed by Hoosier Precision Machining, Bonanza Plumbing, Dunlop, FMF, IMS, KLeN and ZLT.

Round two of the 10-round series takes place on February 12 outside of Ridgecrest, California, at the Four Aces M.C. event.

Caterham kicks off 2012 Formula One season with CT01 launch

2012 Caterham CT01

It's that time of year, ladies and gents, when Formula One teams begin unveiling their new cars for the upcoming season. But while top teams like Ferrari and McLaren usually compete for the first slot, this time it's Caterham that has beat them all to the punch by revealing its new CT01.

Caterham, as you may recall, is the new name of what was known until now as Team Lotus, a name which has now been reclaimed from the Malaysian outfit that was using it through a contentious licensing agreement by the British automaker and engineering consultancy (which has now taken over the team formerly known as Renault). Got all that?

Bearing a similar green and yellow livery and much of the same design as last year's Lotus, the CT01 represents some of the changes you can expect to see across the board as the rest of the field fills out. That includes a rather odd-looking stepped nose design and reshaped rear quarters (due largely to the ban on exhaust-blown diffusers).

Underneath the bodywork - shaped in the Williams wind tunnel - sits the same Renault RS27 V8 engine that will be used this season by Red Bull, Lotus and Williams, coupled for the first time (for this team) to a Kinetic Energy Recovery System on the brakes and a Red Bull-sourced seven-speed sequential gearbox.

Heikki Kovalainen and Jarno Trulli will return for driving duties once the season kicks off in March. Before then, McLaren is expected to unveil its new MP4-27 on February 1, Scuderia Ferrari and Force India on February 3, Lotus on the fifth, Sauber and Red Bull on the sixth, and Mercedes-Benz on the February 21, with the remaining teams yet to announce the dates for their unveilings. Stay tuned.

Ant West To Retire From Racing Due To A Lack Of Sponsors

Popular Australian rider Ant West is to retire from motorcycle racing. The popular Australian made the announcement on his personal Facebook page, citing the failure to raise sufficient sponsorship to be able to pay for a ride for 2012. West was signed up to ride an Aprilia CRT machine for the Speed Master team in MotoGP in 2012, but was unable to find the 250,000 euros that the team had demanded he bring to the ride.

West posted on his Facebook page that he had attempted to sell his car, his motocross bike and his house in Switzerland to help fund the Speed Master ride, and had even offered his house as collateral. That had not been sufficient to save his ride, however. The Australian faces similar problems racing elsewhere, as all the other teams are demanding that West bring money to a ride, and West cannot afford to do that.

Sykes and Lascorz complete Spanish testing

KawasakiTom Sykes and Joan Lascorz joined forces in the new-look Kawasaki Racing Team for a first 2012 test at Almeria in Spain on 19 and 20 January. The new initiative of a long winter test ban (brought in by the series organisers this season) has only recently ended and therefore the Almeria sessions gave the whole KRT effort an opportunity to get back together and enjoy some some valuable track time with the Ninja ZX-10R.

Sykes left with the best lap time, a 1 minute 34.6 seconds, while Lascorz took a 1'35.1s. Overnight temperatures fell to near freezing point but track conditions once the sun had come up each day were such that the riders and technical staff had a great chance to work through the many set-up options on the latest race version of the Ninja ZX-10R. The team will now take their optimum material and set-up data to the awesome Phillip Island circuit in Australia for two separate test sessions before the opening race weekend of the season.

Tom Sykes: "It went very well because we arrived at another kind of circuit compared to the ones we have tested at before and the bike worked well straight away. After a big winter lay off it only took me ten laps to go faster than I have ever been at Almeria. I was happy with that. After that it was a case of testing some small items we had requested from KHI. It was consistently around 15 degrees in terms of track temperature and the sun was shining, so we could not ask for any more in January. The track was in good condition as well, just a bit dusty off line."

Joan Lascorz: "We tested everything! It was cold in the mornings at Almeria but the track conditions were good and it was sunny each day, but there was some snow in the mountains around the track. This is the last test before we go to Australia so we decided the final direction of the machine set-up to take there and, in general, for the rest of the season. Tom and I have very a different machine set-up now but it is just to suit our different riding styles. The most important thing is that the difference between the fastest riders and the others in the races is that they get the tyres to last for the whole race distance. This is the most important thing."

Yoshimura Suzuki News Release

LOS ANGELES, CA (January 22, 2012) – It was a stellar night for Yoshimura Suzuki Racing’s Brett Metcalfe. The young Australian raced his Yoshimura Suzuki RM-Z450 to a well-earned fifth-place finish at round three of the 2012 AMA/FIM Supercross Championship series at Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium on Saturday night. This impressive result also moved Metcalfe up several positions in the overall series points chase.

brett metcalfe, yoshimura, suzuki, rm-z450, los angeles, dodgers stadium, 2012, news release, sx, ama/fim supercross championship, dirt rider magazine

Although the Yoshimura Suzuki racer had been fighting illness all week, Metcalfe still gave it his all at Saturday night’s event. Despite the day’s practice being abbreviated due to inclement weather, Metcalfe shined during qualifying and then put in a solid performance in his heat race to finish fifth. In the main event, which was restarted after a red flag came out for downed riders, Metcalfe continued to shine. He got a good start on the Yoshimura Suzuki RM-Z450 and rode a smart, consistent race to bring home fifth place, his best result this season.

“The whole day was the best we’ve had so far,” said Metcalfe. “The Yoshimura Suzuki RM-Z450 was working awesome. I think I had one of the best bikes on the track all day. The heat race went well, and I ended up fifth. But I rode really well and I think it’s the best ride I’ve had all year. Going into the main, the RM-Z450 was working great out on the track. I got a better start on the re-start, and I was up there early. After being sick, I knew I was going to be short of breath, so I just wanted to hit 20 laps consistently, and ride hard -- but not to the point where I’d push myself to the limit and start going downhill. So I just maintained myself the whole race and came home fifth, which was by far the best result of the year.”

Next weekend, the Yoshimura Suzuki team heads to Northern California for the next round of Supercross. Last year at the Oakland event, Metcalfe carded a fifth-place result and he is looking to improve upon that this year.

“I had a good run at Oakland last year,” said Metcalfe. “We’ve made some good progress over the last week, and I want to thank the whole Yoshimura Suzuki team. We’ve got a good package with the Yoshimura Suzuki RM-Z450 and we’re starting to make steps in the right direction, and I’m looking forward to getting up front at Oakland.”

Team Yoshimura Suzuki Racing’s next event is the fourth round of the 2012 AMA/FIM Supercross Championship on Saturday, January 28th, at O.co Coliseum in Oakland, CA.

Today was Preziosi’s turn under the spotlight at Wrooom, the combined Ducati/Ferrari team intros in the Italian Dolomites where the latest Desmosedici is unveiled. Not this year. The bike is being rushed to be ready for a test next week in Jerez with Carlos Checa and Ducati test rider Franco Battaini. Even the riders haven’t seen it.

Both Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden deferred technical questions to Preziosi during their media briefings on Tuesday. But Preziosi wasn’t forthcoming and, to be honest, didn’t get a lot of technical questions. Those that he did get, he dodged for the most part.

So what do we know that we didn’t know yesterday? The motorcycle is almost entirely new.

Justin's mom Karen sent in this update:
When Justin was racing in the 2010 Baja 1000 crashed and he landed mostly on the right upper portion of his body, his ribs, arm, neck, shoulder, scapula and head were all injured. His arm doesn't work as of yet, the injury he has is called brachial plexus.

http://www.assh.org/Public/HandConditions/Pages/BrachialPlexus.aspx

The nerves in his arm are damaged, so the brain cannot communicate with the arm and tell it to function properly.

Speech is still difficult for him so he attends speech therapy. He also attends occupational therapy and physical therapy and continues to improve, never giving up.  This kid is able to do one armed push-ups with his left arm and kick out a bunch of sit ups with a 20 lb weight on his stomach. He always says, "If there is a will, there is a way."

Justin recently underwent a 7 hour double nerve transfer surgery at UCLA with our amazing doctor, Dr. Nader Pouratian to help repair his right arm. He was suppose to stay 3 days in the hospital, but was out of the hospital by 1:00 the next day.

Seriously, he is one tough kid, he never complains of pain and never says "I can't." When asked if he wanted pain medication for home, he said "No." I didn't even fill the prescription, because I knew he wouldn't take it.

Justin is in the process of being accepted to Coastline Community College and if all works out, he will start attending in January 2012. Coastline has a brain injury program and he will benefit tremendously from this cognitive program.

Justin is a miracle.  Going from being in a coma for 20 days, on life support, a ventilator, feeding tube and a screw in his skull to measure pressure in the brain. He is now driving himself to the many, many medical appointments.

Yes, he did have to relearn how to walk, eat, and tend to the normal daily hygiene routines. He is able to text left handed on his iphone and loves to communicate on Facebook. Show your support and friend Justin on Facebook either on Team Justin ImHof or Justin ImHof.

He is ALWAYS shining with that huge "Justin" smile. He believes he was "reborn" on November 18, 2010 the date of his accident.

Motorcycle vs. Car Drift Battle 2 debuts, someone called the cops

Icon motorcycle drive video

We all know sideways is slow. Kicking the tail out and sending the rear tires blazing may take a heaping helping of skill, but it won't win you any races. That doesn't make it any less awesome, however.

Icon has gone through the trouble of crafting yet another drift battle between motorcycle and car, and this time, two specially built Triumph Speed Triple bikes throw down against a 550-horsepower Ford Mustang Cobra piloted by a fictional officer of the law. The trio commence tearing through the rolling hills of mythical High Plains County before facing off.

Admittedly, the drift scene isn't typically our bag of tricks, but this is one of the more entertaining videos we've seen in a good while. Between the bark of the FoMoCo V8 and the wail of the big-bore Triumph Triples, there's enough audio glory on hand to keep us up at night. Throw in some excellent tunes and better videography, and you've got us hooked. Watch the video all the way through to the end for some hair-raising outtakes, including at least one roll over. Hit the jump to check it out.
